Eleanor and Park is modern adaptation of a classic concept. This twist on the typical bildungsroman seamlessly integrates the universality of music, the fragile conscience of a social outcast, and a timeless tale of unsuspecting love, friendship, and the quest for identity.
A book for every misfit, for every teenager that seeks self acceptance, for every lover of classic punk-rock, and for every young person that has ever been in love. This book is a MUST read.

Eleanor and Park would be an excellent addition to any secondary classroom because of its gritty, honest, and unique approach to what it means to be a teenager in modern times. It lends itself for a variety of extension activities including a comparison of the song lyrics that are emphasized in the novel, the non-fiction and persuasive reflections about censorship, and the purposeful syntactical decisions made by the author to create engagement.

1) Censorship and Young Adult Literature https://readingspark.wordpress.com/2013/10/29/rainbow-rowell-and-eleanor-park/
This website tackles the criticisms of the novel by including links to the controversial discourse. Before I could finish saying the title she said "I love that novel." This surprised me because she is notorious for choosing classic literature in place of modern young adult novels. She stated that she could see many applications of the novel in the secondary ELA curriculum, but specifically stated that that she felt it spoke the language of freshman and sophomore students.
We discussed its impact as a modern day bildungsroman in relation to novels such as A Separate Peace, and The Chosen.

Ryan High School had a unique situation occur at the beginning of the 2018 school year. Both of our experienced secondary school librarians relocated to different cities and were replaced with librarians that had only elementary school librarian experience. They have spent the course of the last year familiarizing themselves with young adult literature and the needs of the student demographic.
Our conversation about how literature is integrated and purchased for the library focused on primarily award winners. I was surprised to discover that they were unfamiliar many multicultural young adult awards such as the American Indian Young Adult Literature Award and awards and the Stonewall award. We discussed how we can ensure that all student populations are represented on the shelves of our school library.
