If he doesn't bring a friend, he could get mugged for being a greaser. If he brought someone along, he would probably be fine but they wouldn't really be interested in the movie and it would make the movie less fun. 
When Ponyboy gets mugged by Socs, at first he isn't too scared but once he realizes that they could actually kill him, he gets very scares and remembers his friend lying on the side walk and very bruised up. Lucky for him, his screaming attracted his gang to come and the Socs ran away.

Darry is quite strict on Ponyboy and Ponyboy never feels like what he is doing is enough for Darry. Sodapop is a lot nicer to Ponyboy and they are closer in age.
