Share your experience grading group assignments. If you evaluate participation, do you have your students assess the other group members? Are peer-evaluations anonymous? Do students see what their group members say about them?

Include other words of wisdom about small group activities and assignments, using groups in Blackboard, groups reporting to whole class, etc. This could be your experience as an instructor, but it can also be your experiences as a student working in groups.

For large classes (sometimes I have 120+ students) random assignment seems to be the only logical method I have.

I participated in an assignment where we had to work in groups to arrange a folk song, then record various instruments. It worked well in a virtual environment, especially since all members had access to the necessary technology.

One of the activities I have been a part of was a discussion circle. This activity worked best for 4-5 students. Each group would discuss the subject matter, create a pie chart of some sort and assign an individual thought or idea to each segment of the chart. At the end, the whole pie chart for each group would depict a discussion theory or point.

In my opinion, participation is an essential part of assessing the levels of engagement and understanding that students exhibit. Although feedback on other groups' work is valuable, it should remain amicable and promote engagement of other groups.

As a student, I have learnt that discussion boards that encourage interaction with others' responses really do allow for enhanced understanding and appreciating different perspectives.

In undergrad, we used Moodle discussion boards to collaborate and reply to student posts. The replies or threads were very helpful in organizing conversations and facilitating discussion.

Created a mini survey to help populate groups, questions that help me see when students are available to meet outside of class time, especially if the class is online. I can group students based on availability. Smaller the groups the better 3-4 students max.

Created a survey to find out if the student works in advance of deadlines, meets deadlines on time, and doesn't consider deadlines important. In other words, I try to match students by their work ethic.

I do use peer evaluation, but it is low stakes, formative assessment. It lets me see if there were problems in the group. I always make sure there is somewhere in the group rubric that allows me to take away points for individual's participation.

Student evaluate each other and submit to the instructor. Problems can result in up to 10 deduction on the team project. I always speak to the student when it happens. The student has always agreed with the team evaluation when asked.
