• Goal 4: Quality Education - Gie Gie and other children must spend their  days fetching water, meaning less time for a formal education. Can Gie Gie innovate a better future of water access without a solid education?
• Goal 5: Gender Equality - Is it a gender expectation that women and girls fetch the water? What are the boys and men doing? Are the boys doing other tasks or in school?
• Goal 6: Clean water & sanitation - This is the obvious one with Gie Gie's community and other communities lacking easy access to clean water. Also, the uses for water in the household were very limited as was the amount the could bring back, not much left for personal hygiene. 
• Goal 9: Industry, innovation, infrastructure - Gie Gie's and surrounding communities lack basic infrastructure to get clean water easily. How does this bode for agriculture? Roads for bicycles for easier retrieval of water? Who will do the innovation if the children don't have access to consistent education?
• Goal 10: Reduce inequalities - Gie Gie's community is marginalized compared to many industrialized nations. But even within the book, other communities are further from the water source creating inequalities within the story characters
• Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities - Daily trips to get water isn't sustainable for the people and what happens is someone isn't able to make the trip or the well dries up?
• Goal 15: Life on land - The lack of ground water will make vegetation and animals scarce and soil dusty.
