Pavlov was a scientist who used his dogs to prove that classical conditioning works. His dogs salivated when he walked into the room with food, which is called an unconditioned response because it is natural. Then, he noticed that they still salivated when he walked into the room without food. So, he wondered if he could make them salivate on command with something else. So, he conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell, as shown in the graphic below.

There are two sides of the behavioral approach, although both believe similar things. One side, called methodological behaviorism, believes that humans are a blank slate at birth, and all behavior is learned. Everything has to do with environment. The other faction believes that some behavior is innate. This approach is called radical behaviorism. It is a sort of nurture vs nature kind of debate.

The behavioral approach to psychology uses only observable behavior to draw conclusions. The reasoning behind this is because of simplicity, and also the idea that we are essentially unreliable narrators of our thoughts. This approach focuses on experiments and data, and often uses animals in experiments. One example of the behavioral approach is using reinforcement, which is essentially consequences. Another example is conditioning, which is association based.

There are multiple uses of the behavioral approach in therapies or treatment. One way is exposure therapy, because that is taking a stimulus and reconditioning the response. Another way is through applied behavior analysis, which is a therapy for strictly modifying behavior, with no "talk therapy" involved. Finally, the most popular form of therapy that the behavioral approach is used in is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT combines the cognitive approach and behavioral approach to use talk therapy to modify behaviors.
