This passage is talking about how Americans come together in time of crisis, but hate each other any other time. The author goes on to  give examples, these examples consist of racism, women's rights, and the murders of gay men. This was written one year after 911, and you can tell this was written with 911 in mind. The reason I say this is because of what I said before which was " Americans come together in time of crisis, but hate each other any other time." 911 being the crisis.

Some examples from the text include; "Mongrel nation" In the first sentence, this means that America is a mixed nation of people. Another example is in the second paragraph, and it states " 'Crown thy good with brotherhood' " this is satire. This could be related to us finding so much stuff on the internet that isn't what they teach us in school, what they teach in school is that we are all united even after everything bad that happens.

A personal experience that makes me sure that this argument is still relevant in 2021 takes place in a store about a couple months ago. I was in a store shopping for a fathers day gift with my mom and sister. As we were going to the counter to checkout, there was this white lady behind us. My mom was the only person to see this, but the lady clenched her purse as if I was going to steal from her. My mom then said "Don't worry, he's not going to steal anything" and she was looking stupid. I don't think it'll ever be irrelevant. We as people have a fear of different people. Some people choose to act if this fear and turn it into hate. then others choose to follow this person.

the story states that "terrorism has led to devastation-and unity". this can be compared to the current day. the coronavirus outbreak caused us all to stay indoors. we united over the fact that we were onside. this caused us to all unite over two basic emotions, boredom and fear. this unity lead to possibly the most interconnected time in u.s history.

It can relate because there is still a lot of racism and homophobia. And even in 2021 no man is equal or has equal rights to each other. Women are also still fighting for equal rights even with all the misogyny coming at them.
But even with all the misogyny, racism, and homophobia, America is still known to come together at tragic times. It doesn't matter what race, sexuality, or gender you are. This is what makes America special.

I believe that shows That people that apart came together because of an incident. But once it's over people will forget. I believe this is still relevant because there had been many incidents of racial discrimination for the past year and 9/11 was an opportunity to bring people together. Although many people in America do not get along, they have the ability to come together during a crisis. Like during the cold war crisis, many Americans united against the Soviet Union because they realised that at the end of the day, they were all American and that their nationality mattered more than their race. In dire times like Pearl Harbor, The cold war or 9/11, Different races in America put aside their differences and came together.


What supports the claim is in paragraph 4 where it stated that; "Once these disparate parts were held together by a common enemy, by the fault lines of world wars and the electrified fence of communism. With the end of the cold war there was the creeping concern that without a focus for hatred and distrust, a sense of national identity would evaporate, that the left side of the hyphen—African-American, Mexican-American, Irish-American—would overwhelm the right. And slow-growing domestic traumas like economic unrest and increasing crime seemed more likely to emphasize division than community. Today the citizens of the United States have come together once more because of armed conflict and enemy attack. Terrorism has led to devastation—and unity." This demonstrated how Americans of different races were able to come together and support each other during a crisis. This is one major contribution to the reader's claim and shows how it is still relevant today.

Another major reason why this is still relevant is because it relates to the current Covid-19 Pandemic, which has now gone towards the Delta Variant. During the Covid outbreak, many people were forced to stay inside and meet online, this caused many Americans to create a stronger relationship together. As well as this, everyone was required to wear a mask. The pandemic has brought many people together through the fear of getting the virus, of course when they found out that more people are getting to vaccine and cases stop rising, they reverted back to their old ways.  In conclusion, this passage shows that although it is common that many Americans fight with each other because of their race, they put aside their differences during tragic times and then go back to fighting as if it didn't happen.
