I felt like I was reading a script for a horror movie. Where conjecture and obvious disillusionment governed everyone taking part in her trial. I couldn't help but see the 'mob mentality' of the so called 'trial' leap from Cotton's writing like the ghost of some wild human urge to condemn another, simply because one can. It is clear that each person who came forth with 'evidence' had some personal quarrel with Susanna. This quarrel was then somehow molded into a representation of witchcraft or sorcery. You get a clear sense of exaggeration that is only made more intense by the use of biblical language and scripture. The twisting of words and phrases and meanings begin to deform any religious context into a human malady; taking away from any real spiritual truths. I think it is a text of great value in that it is a reminder of how easily one can manipulate ideas for personal gain. Tragic.
