"Unoka was an ill-fated man. He had a bad chi or personal god, and evil fortune followed him to the earth goddess. When a man was afflicted with swelling in the stomach and the limbs he was not allowed to die in the house...…...Such was Unoka's fate. When they carried him away, he took with him his flute." Despite Unoka's laziness, his sad end is still attributed to his personal god. When Unoka died he carried his flute with him which was the object he loved but this also represented failings in his life.

" 'Who killed this tree? Or are you all deaf and dumb?' As a matter of fact the tree was very much alive. Okonkwo's second wife had merely cut a few leaves off of it to wrap some food, and she said so. Without further argument Okonkwo gave her sound beating and left her and her daughter weeping and her only daughter weeping ………. His anger thus satisfied, Okonkwo decided to go out hunting. He had an old rusty gun made by a clever blacksmith who had come to live in Umuofia long ago …. he was not a hunter. In fact he had not killed a rat with is gun. And so when he called Ikemefuna to fetch his gun, the wife who had just been beaten murmured something about guns that never shot. Unfortunately for her, Okonkwo heard it and ran madly into his room for the loaded gun, ran out again and aimed at her as she clambered over and dwarf wall of the barn." It seems as though whenever Okonkwo feels uncomfortable it makes him very angry , just as how his shame at the mockery of his father made him angry when young. And when he is angry he gets violent. The anger that he considers masculine turns out to have a lot of destructive potential. I think this distances Okonkwo from reality because in reality beating a woman is not okay although it happens a lot.

'That boy calls you father,' he had said. 'Bear no had in his death.' "

Drums usually symbolize there is news in the village. Okonkwo's killing of Ikemefuna continues to affect him, though he would never show or admit this to anyone because he think showing emotions is to feminine.
