The people aren't smart because of their false knowledge that they get from their earbuds. The earbuds are what feed them information but the info is only what the government wants them to hear. Also because of this though people are ignorant they think they are right and only the few people such as Faber, Beatty, and Montag had actual knowledge. There is a a few debates more importantly when Beatty and Montag begin arguing with each other Beatty is all these quotes and poetry that he has learned while Montag doesn't really know what he is saying.
