Collective Behavior

One of the types of collective behavior is crowds. I chose this article because it discusses how lots of UCSB students met in large crowds in order to speak up about lots of things occurring in the school. Crowds have always formed to bring about social change during circumstances of retaliation, opposition, and celebrations etc. The textbook states, "The power of the crowd to challenge the status quo and sometimes to force social change is the reason crowds are so controversial." (Macionis, Pg. 530) This quote correlates with the article above because in said article, UCSB students gathered in a respectful and civilized manner to advocate for their civil rights on campus.

Social Change: Roe v Wade, Possibly Overturned ?

One of the four defining characteristics of social change is that it's controversial. I chose the TikTok above because it's about a very serious and controversial topic circulating around the nation right now. It shows how the possibility of Roe v Wade being overturned could affect women all over the country. According to the textbook, "In short, even the things that seem constant are subject to the twists and turns of change" (Macionis, Pg. 527) This connects to the TikTok above because although Roe v Wade was a decision that happened decades ago, as we can see above, it's still being changed.

Social-Conflict Perspective: Modernity as Class Society

I chose the fact sheet above because it has statistics that show how the top 1 percent, CEO's for example, increased a dramatic amount compared to the working class of typical workers. This correlates with the textbook because in chapter 17 states, "Under capitalism, people are transformed into commodities: a source of labor and a market for capitalist products." (Macionis, Pg. 541) This image is from Quora.com.

I chose the infographic above because it shows a micro-level insight to how some students view their self-image in comparison to one another. I also loved the quote at the very bottom that says, "Astrology allows me to believe in something greater than myself " because it reminded me of a paragraph I had read in the chapter. The paragraph states, "the freedom to choose has little value without standards to guide the selection process ... As a result, many people shuttle from one identity to another... in search of the elusive 'true self'. " (Macionis, Pg. 543)

Postmodernity

One of the ideas of postmodernity is that science no longer holds any answers. According to the textbook, “ postmodern critics argue that science has failed to solve many old problems (such as poor health) and has even created new problems (global warming).” (Macionis, Pg. 546) I chose the video above because it heavily talks about the impact science has had on global warming, including how it was caused by human activities.

Modernization and Our Global Future

I chose the cartoon above to represent postmodernity because it’s a funny yet realistic take on the dependency theory discussed in the chapter. The dependency theory argues that rich countries modernized at the price of impoverished countries, seizing their natural resources and exploiting their people. In chapter 17, it states, "Even today, the world's poorest countries remain locked in a disadvantageous economic relationship with rich nations, dependent on wealthy countries to buy their raw materials and in return provide them with any manufactured products they can afford." (Macionis, Pg. 547) This connects to the cartoon above because in it, a starved and skinny man (representing poorer countries) is offering his only food source, which represents the countries natural resources, to a huge and fat man. (richer nations)
