The aim for the first week of digital sandpit is for the students to explore the technology and know how to connect to the device/robot as well as perform some very minimal operations.

For the zSpace and Vive VR headset, it is an opportunity for the students to explore virtual worlds and spaces

Timing:

The session is a 50 minute session.

Lesson Rundown:

  1. Set up - Equipment should be delivered by Chris
  2. Set up - Required apps should be downloaded prior to lesson
  3. Intro - Explain the purpose of the Digital Sandpit
  4. Intro - Explain what is and isn't acceptable behaviour
  5. Intro - Run an introduction video of the robot / VR)
  6. Explore - Students explore the technology in pairs groups, work  collaboratively (troubleshoot / code / program / build) and give feedback to each other
  7. Conclude - Debrief in small group - Positive / Interesting / Negative / Improvements 
  8. Conclude - Week 6 will continue as per Week 5. Some problem solving and coding techniques will be introduced to help with some of the more complex programming tasks. e.g. Flowcharts and instructional text
  9. Conclude - Pack up. Ensure that robots and equipment are neatly put in piles for collection by Chris

Please expect total chaos!

Students will want to run the robot at maximum speed crashing into a wall. Please encourage this behaviour. The students that really take to Sphero and Dash and Dot are the ones that push try to the boundaries and limitations of the robot.

    For robotics, basic algorithmic problem solving strategics will be used. For example flow charts and UML diagrams.

    For laser cutting and 3D printing, design thinking and creative thinking will continue. Students should be finalising their designs this week.

    For the zSpace and Vive VR headset, it is still an opportunity for the students to explore virtual worlds and spaces. I suggest for zSpace, have a look at the activities section of each application.
