Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. helped the United States of America move forward to get to where we are today. He moved us forward by decreasing racial injustice, and teaching America the laws they had were not fair. Martin Luther King definitely deserves his holiday because he overcame adversity as a child, lead peaceful demonstrations where he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, but unfortunately many people disagreed with him which lead him to unfortunate death. MLK inspired many people to speak their minds, and not be afraid to tell others what they think is right.

Martin Luther King’s childhood was memorable due to his friends and daily life. Martin Luther King could not be friends with everyone he wanted to be friends with, in school a classmate told me, when Martin was just a little boy he became friends with a white boy his age, but it did not last long, when that boy's mother found out she banned the boy from ever seeing Martin again, the boy obeyed his mother and Martin was left alone. Have you ever been friends with someone your mother didn't like because of the way he/she looked? Well Martin Luther King definitely has lost good friends because of the color of his skin. Everyday things such as buying a pair of shoes made Martin's childhood memorable. According to castle.eiu.edu Martin went to a store to buy a new pair of shoes, as soon as he was finished he went to the front of the store to pay, the clerk suddenly said “We don’t serve colored in the front of the store, get in the back.” Noticing the rudeness Martin left without buying the shoes he had wanted, Martin couldn’t do a lot of things he wanted to do as a child, and as an adult just because of the color of his skin. “In the southern states there used to be a law that was called the Jim Crow law, this law made it legal to separate people by the color of their skin,” says my teacher Ms. O'Sullivan. That's why the shoe store clerk didn’t get in trouble when he refused to serve him at the front of the store. Martin’s childhood was very memorable due to his friends and daily life.

Martin Luther King had a dream, that lead him to jail, gave him a prize, and changed America forever. Have you heard of Martin Luther King’s famous I have a dream speech? It was one of the most famous speeches in America, The KIng center.org claims over 200,000 people attended. Many people walked into the speech against him, and walked out by his side. How did MLK get people against him on his side? The KIng center.org also claims he used the bible, the constitution, and many other canonical texts. When he used these very reliable sources he touched many people's soft spots, turning them over to his side. The I Have A Dream speech was not the only speech he said. After MlK was awarded the Nobel Prize he made another speech that touched many people. On December tenth 1964 MLK accepted the Nobel Prize and gave a message that touched many people’s hearts. In the message MLK said, “Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace.” That was one of many now very famous quotes MLK said during his speech. Nobelprize.org declairs this speech touched many people because MLK was the first African American ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. MLK was a very forgiving man and he forgave those who fought against him even if they had put him jail. Thats right MLK went to jail because of his dreams. He went to a jail called Birmingham Jail, mlkonline.net describes as soon as he was freed he sent a letter to the jail saying he forgave them for putting him there. The reason why he forgave them is because he believed and preached this, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” So he decided to drive out the jails hate by using his love and forgiveness. MLK lead many peaceful demonstrations that have changed America forever.

At 6:05 PM on April fourth, 1968, MLK was murdered. It was a devastating day for many people. It was a Thursday and Martin Luther King was shot dead standing on the second floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was rushed to Saint. Joseph’s hospital, and pronounced dead one hour later states www.History.com. He died at the young age of 39, his (second wife not the mother of his kids) was only 19 at the time, his first daughter Yolanda was 13, his first son Martin III was 11, his second son Dexter was 8, and his second daughter Bernice was 6. MLK was murdered all because he had a dream to live a equal life, to stop racial injustice, and to have world peace.

Without Martin Luther King Jr. the US as we know it would be a different place. Even as a very young man MLK didn’t hesitate to share what he thought was right. He wasn’t afraid to share his dreams with the world even though back then his dreams were only a hope lingering in African Americans minds, because of him that hope became reality. Even though Martin Luther King is not with us on this day he will always stay a part of America’s history. Martin Luther King Jr. day is a well deserved holiday cherished by the whole nation, Martin Luther King JR. will never be forgotten.

Ellen DeGeneres

Maybe you know the half of Ellen DeGeneres, the half that helps people in need and has her own show, but do you know the other half? The half that grew up poor and stood for animal rights. The half that helps people for a reason! Ellen DeGeneres is a very unique role model to have because she is helpful, inspiring and creative. Read to find out more about Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres is helpful because she puts a good word out there, notices thing that should be noticed and some of her helpful words. Ellen degrees is helpful because she puts a good word out there, this happens because whenever she gets a chance to express herself she likes to say things that come from the heart. Another way Ellen DeGeneres is helpful is she notices things that should be noticed. For example Ellen puts some stars on her show but she puts somebody on her show that no one knows but they are on there for a reason. She puts people on her show to put out there to the world that these little things in the world should be rewarded. The last reason Ellen DeGeneres is helpful is because she puts herself out there and shares her experiences. Here is one of her quotes:

“Find out who you are and be that person. That's what your soul was put on Earth to be. Find that truth, be that truth and everything else will come ~ Ellen DeGeneres ~

This can help when you're down or feel out of place. Remember this.

Ellen DeGeneres is inspiring because of all the things she believes in, her loving attitude and her famous inspiring words. One reason Ellen DeGeneres is inspiring is because of all the things she believes in with animals. Here is one of her quotes:

“I'm not an activist; I don’t look for controversy. I'm not a political person, but I'm a person with compassion. I care passionately about equal rights. I care about human rights. I care about animal rights.

~ Ellen DeGeneres ~

Another reason Ellen DeGeneres is inspiring is because of her loving attitude. I think this because she always looks on the positive side and has an open mind. The last reason she is inspiring is by one of her meaningful quotes.

“To me, beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.

~ Ellen DeGeneres ~

Ellen DeGeneres is creative with original ideas for her show, having an open mind and playing a variety of different roles.

One way Ellen is creative is by putting her show together. For example Ellen has to plan out her whole show, the games she does and the way she has to keep her audiences interested, to laugh and have fun.

The little things too, the way she introduces herself on her show the way she leaves herself with the the audiences wanting more. Another way Ellen is creative is because of her open mind. Ellen has an open mind when it comes to thinking about everything involving her show that she has to really be open to what her audience's opinion is not hers, it's hard! One last reason Ellen Degeneres is creative is because of the variety of roles she plays in her acting career. For example some of her recent movies from 2016-1999 she starred in:

The Love letter - 1999

If These Walls Could Talk 2 - 2000

Finding Nemo - 2003

Finding Dory - 2016

Ellen needs to have an open mind because she needs to be the character in the movie or T.V. show and feel the emotions.

Ellen DeGeneres is a very incredible and hard working woman because she started from the bottom and made it to the top relying on hope and determination. Ellen DeGeneres is a very unique role model to have because she is helpful, inspiring and creative. Ellen DeGeneres is helpful and inspiring because of all the things she believes in, her loving attitude and her famous inspiring words. Last but not least Ellen DeGeneres is creative because of her putting her show together, having an open mind and playing a variety of different roles. Ellen DeGeneres is one of my role models, now is she yours?

Dogs

Dogs are the best mammals alive! Dogs are the best animals because they fight for our country, they are helpful, and they are loving.

Dogs are great for the army for many reasons, dogs can stand there for a little bit and sniff out hostages that are trapped in mysterious places, this fact is helpful to people in the army because humans take a while to find hostages. Also dogs fight alongside the army, this helps the army because

Hi. The last fact of the topic of dogs are good for the army is when the dogs sniff out bombs or charges so they lead our men right to the bomb/charge, this fact is similar to the fact where dogs can sniff out hostages to help the army. This is one reason of why dogs are awesome for helping out the army.

The second reason of why of course dogs are awesome is when their good dogs that help you out with many things and here's a few of those things. Number one is that dogs can play, that means that when dogs play you can join in the fun and they can create a well friendship with you. The second fact is dogs can do chores to help out the family, this effect also helps the evidence for why dogs are good. The third and final piece of evidence of why dogs are good is how they help blind people which is a big help to the community, this helps the why dogs are good category because they help out the handicap people.

The third and final reason of why dogs are awesome is how their people's best friends. For example when their around you, you show love and affection for your dog, this helps because it show that you like your dog as much as it loves you. Another reason is when dogs are fluffy and cute and that is awesome for you and this starts a fluffy friendship. The third and final example is how they snuggle with you when you're going to sleep, this helps with giving comfort. This evidence show why dogs are people's best friends.

As you can see, the three reasons I just told show that a dog is awesome. The army is proud of these living canines. Farmers and people are happy to have these dogs in their lives. But most of all dogs are nice to everyone, which makes a difference in the world. This all leads up to why dogs are awesome.

*They are so wonderful because of many reasons, such as they can be army dogs that smell out bombs and help the army finish the job, and save the lost citizens from dying of food. But there's more to how a dog is so awesome! They are such friendly dogs as pets, because they're so fluffy cute and make you feel comfortable neer them if they suit you, but watch out they have to love you to. And last of all dogs are your best fluffy friend that’s always on your back. If you do read on past this point you will learn what dogs can do in your life.

Dolphins

Did you know that dolphins are mammals like us? Dolphins are very interesting animals. Dolphins are interesting because they are complex creatures, they know how to find food, and they are intelligent. Read on if you want to know more about dolphins

Dolphins, are mammals like us but they live underwater. In the book Dolphins by Kevin J. Holmes,it says “Dolphins look like fish but they are really Mammals.”Now you're probably saying what I thought they were fish and you're probably wondering what is a mammal and guess what, you are a mammal and humans are mammals. In The same book by kevin J.holmes its says “A mammal is a warm blooded animal with a backbone and breathes in air. That is what a mammal is, now you know. Dolphins have flippers and many more things. DOlphins have two flippers on the side of their body they use them to steer their way and for balance. Dolphins also have a dorsal fin on the top of their body in the middle that is used as their rudder and to keep stable .Then they have their tail on the back of them that tail is called a fluke, They move this up and down to swim they also use it as a propeller then they have their blowhole that's how they breathe. They swim by using their special features and also they have a special kind of body. For example it says in the website National Marine life center it says that dolphins are very streamlined and also it says “A whale's body it is shaped like a submarine,or a body of an airplane.” And because their body is shaped that way they can go really fast.

Dolphins eat many different foods.Dolphins are predators to those foods, also dolphins have predators too. “Sharks and people are dolphins main enemies”. Thats is what Kevin J. Holmes said in the book ,Dolphins .Did you you know that humans could harm dolphins before you read this.? From the same book it says “Most dolphins prefer to eat Fish.” “some dolphins eat squid and crab”. Dolphins find and catch food many different ways.”One way is Fish whacking.”,”Fish whacking is when dolphins use their tails to hit fish.”This is from the book Dolphins by Kevin j.Holmes. Another way Dolphins find food it says online on Dolphins-world.com catch food it says “One method called herding consits of a group of dolphins surrounding a school of fish to concentrate them, after that one or two take turns to come fron the bottom and have the largest amount of fish possble.”That is how dolphins catch food.

Dolphins communicate to other dolphins and people too.”Dolphins use whistling sounds Two Let other dolphins know Who they are and where they are and maybe even how they feel” I read that from the book Dolphin talk by Wen Did you know that dolphins are mammals lidy Pfeffer. In the same book I read It says”A dolphin makes sounds by pushing air back and forth Between Air sacs in the nasal cavity below its blowhole.” “These clicks,Whistles and squeaks move out into the water.” Dolphins and humans are the similar to each other. In the book Dolphin talk it says “Dolphins use movements to scold their young. “When a young dolphin misbehave,It's mother may move its head up and down many times.” That is similar to when a child misbehaves there parents will tell or signal to stop.” Dolphins communicate to humans by making movements and sounds. For example if you go to a place to swim with dolphins they will wave hi sometimes and when you swim with them you can ride them and they will show some cool tricks. In the wild they might not do the exact things because they aren't trained but they will still swim with you and do cool tricks and maybe they will give you a ride. There are also Stories about dolphins rescuing humans from the ocean when they are drowning or in trouble.

Dolphins are fascinating creatures. Dolphins are interesting because they are complex creatures, they know how to find food, and they are intelligent. Maybe now you will want to go to aquarium and see or swim with these fascinating animals you will love them.

Harriet Tubman

Did you know that North America wasn’t always a free country? Many slaves around North America and even the world, tried to escape to freedom in the 1800’s, but only one woman successfully accomplished that task, then even went back to the campgrounds to help thousands of others escape to freedom! That woman was the one and only Harriet Tubman. I bet some of you sometimes think that you’re a slave, owned by your parents by doing chores like taking out the trash and doing the dishes, but slavery back in the 1800’s was much more awful than you could imagine. We are here to discuss Harriet Tubman’s childhood, how she overcame obstacles, and how her quotes changed the world.

Many kids now grow up in apartments or houses that were very nice places to live in, with many stores to buy nice shoes, clothes, and toys, but back when Harriet Tubman was a child the closest things they had to nice clothes and houses were rags and fields. Harriet Tubman’s early years were memorable because of where she grew up, what she did as a young slave, and who her family was. Harriet was born into slavery in the 1800’s in Dorchester County, Maryland. Now you know that America wasn’t always a free country. Harriet’s original name was Araminta Ross (Nicknamed Minty), but she later changed her first name to her mother’s (Harriet), then when she got married, she changed her last name from Ross to Tubman. She had four sisters (Linah, Mariah Ritty, Rachel, and Sophie Ross), and three brothers (Moses, Robert, and Henry Ross). That’s a lot of siblings! Her mother’s name was Harriet Green, and her father was Ben Ross. Her first job besides household jobs was in 1825, where she was a nursemaid. She was frequently and violently whipped when she let the baby cry. That experience in Harriet's life made her as tough as she was later in her life.

Some of you have obstacles that are about bullying, and that was just the same in the 1800’s. Harriet Tubman’s obstacles were tough because of her skin color, slavery, and daily life as a slave. Because her skin color was black, she was forced into slavery. This was the same for most black people around the world too, and they were also violently and oftenly whipped. Good thing we don’t live in that time! After Harriet freed herself and her family, she made 19 trips back to the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom, without losing a single person! I can’t believe she didn’t lose anyone! Harriet's daily life was harsh because she and the other slaves had to wake up and start working at sunrise, and worked all day until sunset. Their owners must have wanted jobs done fast!

Have you ever heard a quote from your hero that sends a message to you? Well Harriet did the same and instead of sending a message to just a few people, she sent messages to people who needed hope all around the world. Harriet’s quotes were memorable because of how they inspired and encouraged others. A Harriet Tubman quote, “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” Means, sometimes you can be free, but inside, you’re not. Harriet’s other quote, “If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there’s shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.” This means, if you want something and know you want it (or need it), keep going no matter what. Another Harriet Tubman quote is, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to change the world.” This means, no matter how big a dream, you have within you the power to make it possible. Another one of her quotes is, “I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.” This means, there isn’t always someone with you or to welcome you, and it’s like you’re a stranger surrounded by unknown people in an unknown land.

In conclusion, Harriet Tubman is an an amazing person. She was born into slavery, had to be whipped every time she let the baby cry, and changed the world with her quotes. She had a challenging life because of her childhood, and her obstacles, and she changed the world with her quotes. I hope you learned a lot about Harriet Tubman, and I hope you want to learn more!

Malala Yousafzai by Jeremy

Malala Yousafzai

By Jeremy Kim

On October 19, 2012, in Pakistan, a girl was climbing up the stairs of a school bus after school when the bus was about to leave, then the bus started to move. But suddenly, the bus stopped. A man at the back of the bus asked “Who’s Malala?” Then the girl got shot in the head, but that man failed his mission to kill the girl, and she survived. That girl was named Malala Yousafzai. She was shot because she just wanted females to be allowed to go to school, but a group of terrorists did not approve that, so she was shot. But she survived and kept on making speeches that girls should go to school. Malala is a powerful and an influential woman because she has a hard childhood, but she is determined, and she was successful.

Malala is an amazing girl who overcame prejudice, a terrible tragedy, and had mistreatment, and all of this was because she was just a girl. One of her first problems when she was just a newborn child. In 1997, according to the book, Who Was Malala Yousafzai?, by Dinah Brown, she was born to a lady named Tor Pekai, but since Malala was a girl, Tor Pekai’s neighbors and her friends did not welcome Malala to the world, because she was a girl, and boys were treated better than girls, but I don’t think that is right, because that is prejudiced and biased. And that was just the beginning of her troubles about gender issues. Later, according to the book Malala Yousafzai: Education Activist, by Rebecca Rowell, when she was older, a group called the Taliban took control of her country, Pakistan. The Taliban made women not be able to have the same rights as men, which is sexist. The women who did not agree with the group were killed or tortured. One of the most serious obstacles was when Malala was shot in the head by a man who was part of the Taliban and was unconscious, according to Rebecca Rowell. Then when she woke up, she was in England, (Because in the country, there was a hospital to heal her from the shot.) far away from her friends, because she just wanted to go to school. All of these reasons show that Malala’s life is difficult.

Malala is also a girl who never gave up on her dreams because she stood for her rights, she didn't give up, and she worked hard. According to the author Dinah Brown, she never gave up on her dreams by protesting for girls that they should be able to have equal rights, like education, honor, and even about walking outside, and I also agree with Malala, about women having equal rights, (At that time period, ladies weren’t allowed to walk outside by themselves. They had to be accompanied with a man!) According to the author Robin S. Doak, who wrote the book Malala Yousafzai; A True Book, she stood for her rights by making speeches and wrote blogs, having a blog name, Gul Makai, about having not equal education as men, and I think that was brave, because the Taliban could have kidnapped, tortured, and could have killed her. According to the author Rebecca Rowell, Malala worked hard because even though she didn’t become a doctor, she wanted to be one, so she studied very hard so she would become a doctor, and this shows that Malala never gave up, she stood for her rights, and she worked hard, and that made her determination.

Malala was successful because of her, and she was successful by getting her own holiday, she made her dream by making schools for girls, and she was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize! One time she was successful, according to the author Dinah Brown, was when Ban Ki Moon, the current secretary-general of the United Nations, announced that Malala’s birthday would be Malala Day. She was also successful according to the website The Malala Fund, by getting a ton of supporters to donate her money to make or rebuild schools for girls, so that means she successful in two ways; she had a lot of supporters, and her dream for girls having equal education as men is coming true. Malala's biggest successful moment, according to Malala Yousafzai, the author of her own bibliography, was when she was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize on October 2014, with Kailash Satyarthi. She was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize! Her dream was a dream of many children (mostly girls), so she deserved to be successful, speaking up for the girls against the Taliban, and because Malala’s determination was her cause and being successful was her effect, and the effect was a very special effect, getting her own holiday, her dream of having girls able to be going to school, and getting the Nobel Peace Prize.

Malala is an amazing person because of all of her traits, a hard childhood, which led to her determination, which led to her accomplishments. A bunch of people admire her because all of her traits, and think of her as a role model. Her traits, having a hard childhood, being determined, and being successful, allowed her to do the thing she wanted to do: able to go to school, and letting other girls to go to school. She also overcame most of her problems. This is why Malala Yousafzai has a hard childhood, that she is determined, and that she was successful.

African Mammals by Mac

African Mammals

Have you ever wanted to learn about African mammals? Yes? Well this is your chance. African mammals are the most popular type of animals in Africa because some eat lower animals on the food chain, or they have so many defenses that they are nearly impossible to eat, also they can be just downright dangerous. You will learn about the lion, elephant and the rhino. So keep reading and learn more about African mammals!

Lions are huge, they eat almost everything and they have a good life. Lions are the largest of the cats. I know this because in Kingdom’s Guide to African Mammals it claims “Lions are the largest of the cats.” This shows they tower over the rest of the cats so no one will challenge them as “king of Africa”so they are very popular. Also the book states “Lions will singely eat a mammal between 50-300 kg. In a pack they can eat mammals between 50-1,000 kg.” This shows they can eat almost anything. National geographic states lions are the only cats in the whole world that live in groups. This shows they will live as a family and protect each other so they are still popular mammal. So, lions are huge, eat almost anything and they live in groups.

Elephants are huge lumbering animals that have a long lifespan, are the largest land animal and are well protected. On page 190 in Kingdom’s Guide to African Mammals it explains a elephant will usually live to 60-70 years. This shows that they will keep reproducing and stay alive for a very long time and be a very popular animal. The book also states“ Elephants are the largest land animal on earth.” This means it will be nearly impossible to kill an elephant without getting killed yourself. Also on the website: National Geographic, it says “ National Geographic has been working to save elephants since 1922.” This shows you that elephants have been protected for a long time and are a very popular animal. Now you know why elephants are a popular animal, because they have a long lifespan, they are the largest land animal and they are well protected.

Rhino’s are mammals with huge horns, they keep populating and they attack under no cost. From National Geographic tells you the first thing you should know about rhinos “ They have the longest horns in the world.” This tells you they can be really scary and dangerous. Also the “ Mother will give birth every 2 years.” That tells you that rhino's keep coming back year round. Rhino’s are also very protective so they will “ Protect their territory fiercely.” This tells you it will be very hard to take down a rhino protecting his territory. From Kingdom’s Guide to African Mammals it says rhino’ will also charge furiously at strangers if threatened. That means they will charge someone they don’t like from the look of you. All this tell you why Rhino’s are a very popular African mammal.

After learning about some of the most popular African mammals it brings us to the conclusion. The animals you learned about today are the lion, the elephant and the rhino. All this tells you why African mammals are very popular because they may eat many animals, have a lot of defenses or might be downright dangerous. Now you know about all these animals and why they are popular.

The United States of America

Did you know that the USA is a home to over 318.9 million people? To be a home to that many people the U.S.A must be a pretty amazing place. The U.S.A is a breathtaking country for so many reasons, because of it’s fascinating landmarks, unique regions, and distinct currency. From bottom to top the U.S.A is filled amazing things, so read more to find out about it!

The United States of America has many fascinating landmarks including national parks and monuments. One of the most well known national parks in America is Yosemite National Park because in the book National Parks by Erin McHugh she writes,“Yosemite is one of America’s most popular, beautiful, and visited parks.” Another well known monument in the U.S.A is the Statue of Liberty. The statue of Liberty was originally copper but it turned green over time. List25.com claims that, “The seven rays on the crown on the Statue of Liberty represent the seven continents.” It’s kind of cool that the immigrants coming to the U.S.A saw the seven rays and knew that they were welcomed and represented in America. One more fact about America’s fascinating landmark from List25.com is that the Liberty Bell was last rung on George Washington’s birthday. It cracked a few hours after it was rung. These are just three fascinating landmarks in the United States of America.

The United States of America has lots of great regions like the Midwest, the Northeast, and the Southwest. According to usa.usembassy.de, the Midwest produces many grain crops such as corn, oats, and wheat. If you lived in the Midwest you would probably eat a lot of grains! Another fact from the book The Land That I Love by Nicole Bartley on page 30 the author writes, “The Northeast is a region that is rich in history and natural beauty.” This shows that the Northeast has plenty to offer. One last fact from usa.usembassy.de is that the Southwest is filled with rich culture and has great holidays to celebrate that. This evidence shows that the United States of America has so many great regions, and great things in the regions too!

The United States of America has an amazing currency system. For example, according to the website U.S.A.GOV, “United States issues paper currency and coins to pay for purchases, taxes, and debts.” without our currency system the United States wouldn't have a great way of operating and it would be hard to work if you aren't getting paid anything. Another fact about our currency system, from the website dailyfinance.com, is that, “The so-called paper money is not actually made out of paper it is made out of a cotton/linen material.” One last example from dailyfinance.com is that just under half of all the bills that are printed are $1 bills! These are great reasons of why the United States of America as such an amazing currency system.

The U.S.A is such an amazing place.

Barry Der Menschenretter

By: Nikki Aryana Mobed

Do you know who Barry der Menschenretter (MEN-shun-RET-tuh) is? A big name for a big dog, Barry was a saint bernard, and he was born in the 1800’s.He grew up in the Great Saint Bernard Hospice in Switzerland. It was a place where travelers could stop, rest, eat, and even stay the night. Barry grew up to be a rescue dog and helped the people traveling in the Alps. Barry is a hero because he was intelligent, popular, and has saved many lives.

Barry was not just a rescue dog, but the greatest St. Bernard rescue dog that ever lived. Barry would go outside with the people who worked at the Hospice, and they would bring a very long stick with them, and Barry would sniff the ground, bark when he smelled a human, and the people would come and slowly put the stick in the snow then stop when they hit something, then they would dig until they found someone, and bring them back to the Hospice. Because he did this so much, much more than other dogs did, he became famous!

Barry was not murdered. It was thought that the 41 person, (a soldier) thought that he was a wolf and killed him with a knife, but really, he got too old and couldn't be a rescue dog anymore, so they gave him to a family and he died of old age in 1814. Now you can find his body in the Natural History Museum in Bern,Switzerland.

You might think that putting a dog in a museum is silly, but when I say Barry was famous, I mean he was famous, for example, most of the dogs saved about 16 lives each, which is still good, but Barry saved over 40 people's lives! If there was a person that saved more than forty lives, shouldn't there be a statue of them? And some of those lives were not with people, once Barry was just being let outside for some fresh air, and he tracked down a mother and her baby freezing to death!

Sadly the mother died, but Barry managed to bring the baby to the Hospice and they saved the baby boy! The people at the Hospice saved him and gave him to a family that wanted a child when he was old enough.

This proves that Barry is intelligent, popular and has saved many lives, this makes him a hero dog, and a dog very well worth remembering.

Steve Jobs made incredible inventions like the Macintosh (or mac), Ipod, itunes, and one of his biggest achievements was the Iphone. Steve Jobs lived a life, but in 2011 his life was cut off because he was battling cancer for a decade, then on October 5th he died. Steve Jobs was an incredible person because of his invention of the Macintosh, iPhone, and iPod. When news was brought out that Steve Jobs died people went to all of the Apple stores and placed down flowers so he would be remembered.

One of Steve Jobs biggest accomplishments were his inventions. The first invention is the Macintosh but usually called the Mac. The Macintosh was the first computer to actually look good because before the Macintosh computer would usually be a dark yellow that wasn't good looking, but then when the Macintosh came out that all changed. The Macintosh had a blue transparent back which made a trend of making computers and laptops look appealing, also it was the first computer with a mouse!

In the year of 1984, the first ever Macintosh phone was released and this was the first ever phone that was a convenient size. Think about our lives today we use the phone to call, entertain, and more. The first macintosh phone 512k could only make calls but that was a huge upgrade from the old “pocket sized” phone. Then in 2007, the first iPhone came out the iphone 2g! The iPhone 2g could do so much more than only make calls. The iphone 2g was like a sports car to them! So this is why the phone was an important invention. Think about the iPhone as a miniature computer!

October 23, 2001 the iPod was made so you can listen to music anywhere! The iPod could be listened to virtually anywhere. It was also the device that allowed astronaut Jose Hernandez to listen to music in orbit (space). There is the iPod nano that is very small and on July 25, 2015 Apple announced a newer model of the iPod that was better than the last iPod which was like a phone but couldn't make calls.

These were some of the inventions that Steve Jobs made that innovated the world in many ways. Steve Jobs was an incredible person because of his invention of the Macintosh, iPhone, and iPod. The reason Apple was named Apple was because Steve Jobs’s favorite fruit was an apple. Jobs was a pescetarian, meaning he ate no meat except for fish. So when you think of an Apple think of Steve Jobs the leader of the technology industry!

Richard Turner

Many people love what they do, but few of these people are so devoted to magic that they would name their own kid after a card (Asa Spades Turner; it’s true)! Meet Richard Turner, a professional cardsharp and cheat who has devoted his life to the pasteboards. He is an inspirational man because of who he is, the obstacles he has faced, and his achievements. Do you enjoy learning about amazing people? Read on to find out about one of the most incredible people in the world, Richard Turner.

Richard is an incredible person just with who he is because of his card work, amazing sense of touch, and athletic ability. It all starts with an impressive job; professional cheat, as told on page 73 of Fooling Houdini: Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks and the Hidden Powers of the Mind. Richard performed at the Magic Castle and lectured many times, showing off his cheating skills. Also his touch is so good that Richard also has a job just touching cards, as Jason England declared in the April 2007 Genii Magazine article! “...USPCC sends Richard several dozen decks of cards each year and asks him to analyze the paper stock, finish, and cut.” One of Richard’s payments for this is a lifetime supply of Bicycle cards. With all of this, it is remarkable that Richard can sleep, let alone train athletically. In fact, he is a martial arts fighter who has fought alongside Chuck Norris, as Jason England claimed in his Genii Magazine article. All of this proves how Richard Turner is an incredible person.

By the way, Richard can't see. That's right, he's blind, and it's only one of the many obstacles he has faced including his blindness, mobs, and hernia surgery. Richard’s eyes are in fact worse than blind, as Alex Stone confirms in Fooling Houdini. “Actually, Turner’s vision is six grades below the cutoff for blindness.” For a cardsharp and fighter, this is a big disadvantage and obstacle. Richard has also encountered mobsters who want him to cheat for them, as said in Fooling Houdini by Alex Stone. “...when the top organized crime families in New York and overseas were pursuing him relentlessly…” Richard was actually given a gun, even though he was blind. “...armed for his own protection by the head of the San Diego SWAT team.” That’s not all- even recently Richard has faced new obstacles, such as hernia surgery mentioned on page 75 in Fooling Houdini. “...five years ago, when forced to undergo hernia surgery…” Facing all of these obstacles truly makes Richard Turner even more of an inspiration.

After learning more about Richard, it is obvious that he has many achievements. Some of them are great products and releases, legendary status as a cardsharp, and a black belt. Richard has released many different types of products, such as card DVDs (Richard Turner: The Cheat Special Edition; Double Signed Card Routine; Fans, Flourishes, and False Shuffles; Best of the Bottoms 2 DVD set; Shifts, Hops, and Magic Passes; The Science of Shuffling and Stacking; and Live Lecture: 35 Years of Cheating, Fighting, and Fun), a book (Re-Deal: A Time Travel Thriller), and puzzle games (Batty and Texas Showdown). Richard has even gotten praise from the man known as the Professor in magic- Dai Vernon, Alex Stone claims. “‘Richard Turner does things with cards that no one else in the world can do,’ Vernon once said.” As you know, Richard is a fighter. But did you know that he is a sixth degree black belt, as Alex Stone declared in his book Fooling Houdini? Well, he is. Richard Turner seems to be a man who does not do many things that he is not a master at.

Once you know who Richard Turner is and what he does, it is hard not to feel inspired to excel at something(s) that you love, as Richard Turner has done with his life. He is truly an inspiration through just who he his, and you get even more impressed when you learn about the obstacles he has faced. This just keeps growing as you learn about his incredible achievements. If you want to be good at something, get the mindset of Richard Turner and practice, practice, and practice.

By Reagan O’Neil

richardturner52.com

April 2007 GENII Magazine Cover Story by Jason England

Fooling Houdini: Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks, and the Hidden Powers of the Mind

Tom Brady

Tom Brady is a amazing quarterback that has brought 4 Superbowls to New England, and has over 100 wins in his career. On his road to greatness, he has become better than many other QBs, and has 4 Super Bowl wins, all while he turned a terrible team into a good one. Read on to learn about the best quarterback the world has ever known.

Tom Brady is better than many other QBs because he was put in the starting spot because he was better than the Patriots old QB. He also beat Peyton Manning in their first matchup, and outplayed the Ram’s QB in the Super Bowl. He started off as a face in the crowd, but with many wins against other great QB’s, he was recognized and now stands out as a respectable athlete. Sports Center says that after being picked 199th in the draft, Tom spent 2 years on the bench, waiting to play. He got his chance when the Patriots starting quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, was injured in the second game of the 2001-2002 season against the New York Jets. An online USA today article tells me that Brady played against the 2-0 Colts with the 0-2 Patriots on September 30, 2001 and won! After beating Peyton Manning (who was predicted to be the best QB ever when he was drafted) and the Colts, Brady won two more games that month. When Drew recovered, Brady had secured his starting position. An online NFL.com article tells me that Brady went on to go 11-5 and the Boston Globe tells me that he won the super bowl against the Rams. There is a good chance that Brady would not be as well recognized in his first season or two if he hadn't had those big victories to promote him.

Tom Brady has led the Patriots to 4 super bowl wins because he brought a sense of hope in winning the Super Bowl, won 3 super bowls in 4 years, and holds three MVPs. Boston.com tells me that the Patriots were 0-2 in super bowls before Brady came. Now the Patriots have a 4-4 record. After winning the 2000-2001 season super bowl, Brady continued to play with the Patriots. The Patriots were awarded 2 more Super Bowls in the next 3 years, winning in 2003 and 2004. Then, they went quiet. They won no Super Bowls until they won in 2015 against the Seattle Seahawks, 28-24. There were losses for him too. He lost in the 2011 Super Bowl to the famous helmet catch late in the fourth quarter. Sports Center once again provided me with the information that Eli Manning connected with David Tyree to make a 32 yard reception that pretty much won the game. CBS sports says “Tom Brady was, of course, the MVP for superbowls 36, 38, and 49.” It is probable that the Patriots would still be empty handed for Super Bowl victories if it wasn't for Brady.

Tom Brady turned a terrible team into a great one by keeping their spirits up with his young energy, always leaving everything on the field, and by always pushing him and his team to the limit. When he first got on to the Patriots, the team was having another bad season. Having never been awarded a Super Bowl, the team was down and blinking out, but Brady gave the whole team enough energy to make a run and win the Super Bowl. Brady never walked off the field with a full tank. Every game, every half, every quarter, Tom Brady walked off the field with a river of sweat pouring down his face. Every game, win or lose, Brady pushed himself and his team to the limit. Whether it is a bench pep-talk or a halftime pump up, Tom pushes himself to go farther than the limit so that the Patriots can look their best in every game. This clearly demonstrates that Brady turned a terrible team into a great one.

After hearing about just Tom Brady, it is hard not to think that the underdogs stand a fighting chance whether they're ranked 10, or 199, there is always a possibility of victory, or a playoff journey that could last over a decade! But none of this would have happened if Brady hadn't beaten many other great QBs, won 4 superbowls, and turned a terrible team into a great one. All and all, it is easy to see that Tom Brady is one of the greatest QBs, or even the greatest QB ever!

By: Ryan McClennen

Sports Center Boston Globe

USA today Boston.com

NFL.com CBS sports

Dragons by Starly

Dragons

Are you a person who dreams about dragons? Dragons are godlike and mystical, but don't you want to learn more about them? Over the course of history, these legendary lizard like animals were mentioned in myths, folktales, and legends. Dragons are wondrous creatures with different abilities and personalities. Some have wings, others don’t. There are many different types of dragons and they all have their own differences. This essay mentions some of the land-dwellers, flyers, and unknowns.

Ground breeds are not as popular as the ones that fly, but they are still amazing in their own ways. People don’t consider the cockatrice a true “dragon”, but it still fits the category of it being one. It is sometimes known as a basilisk, but is more commonly known as the cockatrice. A cockatrice is a rooster like animal that is like Medusa in a way. The cockatrice has a rooster like body with a snake’s tail. His gaze penetrates deep inside you and turns you into stone (found in Arthur Spiderwick’s Guide to the Fantastical World Around You.) Now that you learned a bit about one of the ground breeds, let’s move on to something new!

Flying breeds are varied with many different types with their own personalities, such as the peaceful ones from Asia to the western ones who take a more violent approach, capturing humans and collecting hordes of treasure. The Asian ones are peaceful creatures with the abilities to bring rain, thus their abilities helped the people a lot, and the result of their kindness caused them to be venerated. The only difference between them is how many claws they have, the Chinese dragon has five claws, the Japanese has three and the Korean has four claws (found in Drake’s Comprehensive Compendium of Dragonology.) The western ones are the ones in the fairy tales you read. They are aggressive and enjoy breathing fire to roast their meals, which consists of lamb, cows, humans, and other livestock. They live in dens, where they keep the hordes of massive treasure such as gold coins, jewels, gems, sparkly jewelry, crowns, and anything else of importance or use to them. Some Asian dragons collect treasure as well.

Unknowns are, as their name suggests, unknowns. Are they truly dragons? Some unknowns are the Leviathan, a sea serpent like creature, and the Quetzalcoatl, a winged serpent found in the ruined temples of the Aztecs. The Leviathan could be a dragon that inhabits the water, the Leviathan looks like a sea serpent, but can also look very different too. The Quetzalcoatl appears as a winged serpent, whose wings are covered with white feathers, giving it a seraphic/holy appearance. The Leviathan can be used to describe any sort of large water form, (found Dictionary.com) but is used to describe a sea serpent. Now that you learned about the unknowns go on to the conclusion.

The dragons mentioned here seem wondrous and amazing, don't they? You have learned about some of the most popular dragons, such as the Chinese and Western ones that fly, the land-dweller known as the cockatrice, and the unknowns, such as the divine Quetzalcoatl and mysterious Leviathan. Now it’s time for you to take the knowledge you learned today and share it with others!

“By: Starly Li, a fifth grader at Joseph E. Fiske Elementary School.
George S. Patton by David

General George S Patton

Have you ever heard the name old blood and guts? If you have you were probably talking about George S Patton. Old blood and guts was his nickname, but a soldier whose said “yah his guts and our blood.” Old blood and guts is one of George S Patton's nicknames. Also Patton graduated from West Point in 1909 and went on to become one of the best U.S generals in history. Patton was very smart and important because he received 6 awards. Also he was able to rise up the ranks to a general and fight in both World War I and II, the biggest wars in the world. Now that you know a little bit about Patton you can learn a little more by reading on.

George S. Patton received many awards from medals to ribbons. Patton received the Distinguished service cross for extreme gallantry and risk of life. The distinguished service cross is the second highest award in the U.S army. Patton also received the Purple Heart in 1932 for his combat wounds in 1918 when he was leading a tank charge. Patton was also given the legion of merit which is given to a man or woman in the “performances of outstanding series and achievements. This shows that Patton was not afraid to get hurt or killed to do what was right.

Patton fought in three wars, two of which were the most famous war of all time World War I and World War Ⅱ. The first war that Patton was a part of was the Mexican Revolution. Patton was also a part of World War Ⅰ where he got his medals. Also he was given over 300 tanks. But the biggest war that Patton was a part of was World War Ⅱ where he commanded the U.S 7th army then in France in 1944 he commanded the 3thd army then at the very end he commanded the 15th army. This shows that Patton was a determined man to fight and even die for his country.

Patton graduated West point in June 11th1909. Since he graduated from West Point he is given the rank of second lieutenant. During WWⅡ Patton was visiting a hospital in Italy when he saw a soliger crying he saw nothing toned slap him and ordered him to the front lines. What he didn't know was that the soldier had shell shock. Patton was demoted from Lieutenant gen to Brigade gen. Also in January 26 1918 Patton was given the rank of Major and was given the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This tell you that Patton was given many ranks but like all he was not perfect.

From this you can probably tell make out that George S. Patton was a very imported general the U.S Army. if not then you have not been paying atchen at all. After all the wars that Patton was a part his last one the one he lost the war for life when Patton was in a car crash he got praised he fought for 12 days but lost so say that Patton was poisoned at the hospital because a russian soldier said he did. Over all this just a very small part of Patton big imported and nieces life.

   							By David S.

      Fenway Park

Fenway park has been home to the Red Sox for 104 years and is know across the USA. It is also known as the first professional baseball stadium in the country. Fenway Park is the best baseball stadium in the country because it has it's amazing history, mouth watering food, and and its amazing features. Have you ever been to a ballpark that changes into a 140 Foot slope in the winter? Well Fenway park does. People at Fenway bring in piles and piles of snow and make it into a huge ski slope. Olympic players come to Fenway and compete in a skiing/snowboarding competition to win 10,000 dollars. Many people come to Fenway to see an amazing winter Competition complete with a DJ and many delicious concessions.

Fenway Park is a historic landmark because it's one of a kind and is home to one of the best baseball teams in the U.S.A. After two rain delays, Fenway Park finally played its first professional baseball game on April 20, 1912.The first official game was played in Fenway and it actually occurred on April 9 when the Sox beat Harvard University 2-0. The game would have made the front page of the newspaper if it had not been for the sinking of the Titanic a few days before the game.

Fenway Park doesn't just have your usual pretzels and peanuts it has a huge variety of foods like Fenway franks and italian sausages. Inside Fenway Park, They made a huge renovation by tearing up some walls behind right field and built in a brand new large concourse area. The Big Concourse area has entertainment, picnic tables and best of all, brand new bathrooms. The Big Concourse also has most all of the varieties of food available at Fenway, including barbeque, deli sandwiches, kettle corn, and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. If you are on a diet or just want to eat something healthy, healthy options can be found here too: wraps, paninis, watermelon, veggie dogs and burgers, Caesar salads and fruit salads. If you want something sweet, you can get: cotton candy, fried dough, funnel cakes, ice cream, kettle corn, milk shakes and slushies.

Fenway Park has many famous landmarks traveling all across Fenway with interesting facts in them. Some of Fenway Park's interesting landmarks are the Green Monster, The Citgo Sign, and Yawkey way. The Citgo sign is a landmark of Fenway Park. You already know it is the brightest sign covered in light on the Boston skyline. But here are a few things you might not know about the regular Citgo sign. The Citgo sign is said to be the largest sign in New England In 2005 the Citgo sign went through a major upgrade in technology from using neon tubes to LEDs.It has survived five hurricanes with winds going over 80mph. The Green Monster is standing 231 feet across Fenway Park’s field but the Green Monster didn’t start as the Green Monster. It started as a boring old wooden fence. Wally the Green Monster is the official mascot for the Boston Red Sox. His name got picked for the Green Monster wall because of his green coat of fur and the green wall. Yawkey Way was named after Tom Yawkey, the owner of the Boston Red Sox from 1933–1976, which is 69 years! Yawkey Way is famous as a representation of Fenway Park and is closely in a relationship with the park and the Red Sox team. Jayson stark says “That moment, when you first lay eyes on the field- the monster, the triangle, the scoreboard, the light tower Big Mac bashed, the left- field grass where Ted Williams once roamed- it all definines to me why fenway park is so Historical.

In conclusion Fenway Park is really the best official ballpark in the country. From its amazing history all the way to the great ballpark it is today. Fenway Park is the best baseball stadium in the country because it has it's amazing history, mouth watering food, and and its amazing features. Fenway Park has changed amazingly over the years of baseball history and will continue to over the years. Fenway Park is an amazing baseball park and I hope everyone will take time to see it.

   									-Leo Harmon

Nantucket by Mia

Nantucket

Have you ever been to Nantucket before? If you haven't, you're missing out on a lot of fun.. They say, “ Nantucket is the easiest place to fall in love with.” . I say, Nantucket is the easiest place to fall in love with because of it's beautiful beaches, fun activities, and unique traditions.

In Nantucket, each beach has it own personality and something for everyone, from wavy beaches, to calm beaches, surfing beaches, and some even just for kids. If you are looking for a surfing or wavy beach, head to the north shore. You don't see young kids there often just usually teens and adults. The south shore and east shore include some of the children's beaches and calmer areas. Also, another thing to keep in mind is rip currents. According to the Nantucket Newspaper , “ Rip currents in Nantucket can end in severe injuries and sometimes drowning.. The way to tell if there is a strong rip current today, the water will be sandy and have discoloration . The activities that you can do in the water is endless. Nantucket dot net claims, “ Nantucket's signature games involve, Kadima, sailing, and sand boarding .” . Kadima is a form of ping pong but without no table and net, sailing is not really signature but tourist do it a lot, and sand board in a mix between boogie boarding and surfing, you throw the board in the sand and when the water rolls on shore you jump in the board and start gliding!

Activities on Nantucket are very common in other places around the world but on this island they put a little twist on the action. For example fishing, you see this a lot at the beach or basically anywhere with water. Have you ever seen fishing with just your bare hands! Probably not as common . The Nantucket Fish Company announced , “ Siasconset pond is known for its potential to go fishing with your hands. Some of our top fisherman here on the island are the only ones who are accomplished to do so and we recommend that children do not undertake this task. “ . Biking in Nantucket is very common especially for exercise.. The Nantucket gym is not very big but the big thing that people use when they do go to the gym is the track. The track can be as a running track or for biking. Inside of the gym. You can rent bikes and bike around the track. The Nantucket Bike CO uses 6 bike paths that have been used since 1904. The company sells about an average of 25 bike tours a day with 20 people in one tour. According to The bike company, “ Madaket beach is a beautiful beach at the furthest west of the island. The path is roughly 6 miles and has a restaurant just for tourist to take breaks. “ . The last popular activity is shopping. Shopping in Nantucket is huge on the island and usually people spend their day shopping rather than going to one or two shops because there is always something for everyone. The sunken ship is the most popular gift shop on the island. It includes Nantucket T-shirts, beach gear, and toys for all ages. The Juice Bar was voted the number one ice cream shop in New England and everything is homemade, for example their cones, ice cream, and toppings! The Nantucket Candy Company is best known for its salt water taffy . Their taffy was voted the best taffy in New England. According to the Candy CO, “ Our factory is 100 yards long and 55 yards wide, we also have over 500 employees working for us. We love to watch our company grow and grow throughout the years. “ .

As you know Nantucket is a wonderful island but what

really makes Nantucket differ from other island are its traditions. One day I saw two seniors throw 2 pennies of the ferry as I was heading to Nantucket. They tossed the pennies at the Brant Point lighthouse. When I went inside the boat I asked my parents about the pennies, they said it was a tradition for luck. According to a Nantucket resident, “ I am not sure how this tradition started but I do it for my love for the island. When we board the boat for our journey across the water, the island will be waiting here to welcome us home. “ . Another unique tradition is the fourth of july parade. The tradition started in the 1970s just for fun but then the island started to do the parade every year and take it very seriously . Besides the parade, they have face painting, food challenges, arts and crafts, dunk tanks, and games. The people of Nantucket told us, “ 4th of july weekend is definitely the most crowded weekend of the summer. Between, tourist, kids, and visitors it gets a little crazy. “ . The last tradition that is a family tradition so not all people do it is going to The Juice Bar once a week. My family has made an agreement that we have to go to The Juice Bar once a week. The Juice Bar is the most popular ice cream shop on the island. I talked about the Juice bar earlier in the essay and it is a family business that has been there for over 50 years! My family has never missed one week without ice cream in 5 years!

Now do you see why Nantucket is the best! Am I right with the beautiful beaches, fun activities, and Unique traditions? I hope you enjoyed reading about this fabulous island. Can't wait to see you in Nantucket!

By: Mia Zinny
