Beauty & Power In the Learning Environment

You create a learning environment where all students see the power and beauty of mathematics by establishing relationships with students that allow for mistakes. You further this allowance by fostering peer relationships that recognize that mistakes are expected, respected, inspected, and corrected. (I borrowed this from somewhere along my teaching journey and love it!) We are human so we will make mistakes [expected]. We are human and deserve respect from others AND OURSELVES, so we do not hide our mistakes, we own them and forgive others and ourselves quickly, if needed [respected]. We inspect our mistakes to find out what went wrong [inspected]. And finally, we correct our mistakes whenever possible [corrected]. Studies prove we sometimes learn best from mistakes, so expecting perfection is not helpful and a learning environment with this permission to make and learn from mistakes opens the power and beauty of mathematics to all students.
