         <description><![CDATA[<div>the tiber river is the second longest river on the italian peninsula and it flowed right through rome. this and the po river were important to rome because it helped early settlers with a source of fresh water, the rivers were also used as a trading route. the rivers also helped the soil become very rich with it already being rich from the volcanoes</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>two mountain chains, the alps and the apennine mountains help rome by protecting it from invasions. the mountains also divided the peninsula in half, so then rome could come together and counter the attack. also rome could split in half and one half would stay one one side of the mountains and when invaders came, they would flank them.</div>]]></description>
