The Reign of Terror lasted from September 1793 to July 1794. Silence all critics of the new government. 300,000 of them were arrested and 17,000 executed in less than a year. Eventually even Robespierre fell to The Terror. Robespierre thought terror is necessary to deal with the enemies of the revolution. There was a list of people for execution and people never knew if friends or family might appear on a list of guillotine victims. Some authorities claim that even after the head has been severed, the victim could remain conscious for up to 30 seconds.
