An ordinary fly is listed in the Red Book of Karelia as a rare species. Settled throughout the territory of Karelia, but everywhere it is small and disappears due to deforestation. Small animal up to 20 cm and weighing up to 160 grams, a kind of squirrel. The flying squirrel is smaller than an ordinary squirrel, it has round ears without brushes and huge eyes, which is typical for twilight animals. Claws on small paws are steeply curved and sharp. The color of dark gray with yellow furs allows the rodent not to stand out against the background of trees. The flattened fluffy tail is slightly smaller than the length of the body, it serves as a rudder and brake in flight. A distinctive feature of flying squirrels, a kind of parachute (membrane), it serves as a fur-lined wide fold of skin between the wrist and ankle. Spreading the paws and spreading the membrane fearlessly plans a small animal for distances of 40 meters or more.

Brui Anna

For Karelia hedgehog is an exotic animal, belongs to rare species and is found only in southern regions. They say that in the 1940s hedgehogs were specially imported to Karelia, and this is similar to the truth. A lot of unreasonable things were done at this time, for example, we were persecuting aboriginal fish in the reservoirs and trying to breed southern specimens, for the reproduction of which there is too cold water. Here and for this animal the severe Karelian climate does not approach at all. Nevertheless, a certain number of hedgehogs are and must be remembered that they are listed in the Red Book of Karelia.

The size of the manul is similar to a normal domestic cat: its body length is about half a meter, tail length is about 25-35 cm, and weight is maximum 5 kg. Peculiarity of the manul is its very thick and fluffy coat, massive body and short strong paws. His head is slightly flattened, his ears are small and widely planted, and the expression of the muzzle seems unhappy and aggressive. Such an unusual structure of the head allowed scientists to say that the distant relative of the manul is a Persian cat.

Manul is an extremely cautious animal, who rarely runs away in case of danger. In a hungry time can eat and insects.

The most active shows early in the morning, in the evening or at night, and during the day usually rests in shelter. Lives in burrows left by foxes, marmots or badgers, hides in crevices of rocks or under stones. Most often leads a lonely and sedentary lifestyle.
