Physicality (5’5, green eyes, tiny thumbs, curvy, athletic, etc)

Bernard's physical appearance is not that appealing. According to Fanny, "He's so ugly." (ch. 3) "And [he is] so small." Fanny made a grimace; smallness was so horribly and typically low-caste.”"They say somebody made a mistake when he was still in the bottle–thought he was a Gamma and put alcohol into his blood-surrogate. That's why he's so stunted." (ch. 3) "Ford, how I hate them!" Bernard Marx was thinking.” These quotes express how people thought of him because of his physic and simply looking different. They ask whether they put too much of a dosage on him to make him look the way he does, he is judged and ridiculed.

Bernard has a tender personality who truly cares, as seen in “I think he's rather sweet." She smiled to herself. As well as expressing "how absurdly shy he had been!” (ch. 3). Lenina viewed his personality this way, but according to Fanny he was gruesome.

Bernard is a man that is not like everyone else in his society. He doesn't like the same things that everything else does. Which is seen on the quote below, that says "they say he doesn't like Obstacle Golf." (ch. 3). “He spends most of his time by himself–alone." There was horror in Fanny's voice.” (ch.3) “Bernard hated them, hated them.” aka invitations (ch.3). These quotes clearly demonstrate the worries and dismays.

Effect of Others; Things you cause others to feel

Bernard is an Alpha Plus which means that he is widely known and adored by the community based on his position. Huxley states other people's reactions in which he makes an affect or impression towards others from the moment they hear his name when he states, "Why not? Bernard's an Alpha Plus. Besides, he asked me to go to one of the Savage Reservations with him. I've always wanted to see a Savage Reservation."(44). The significance behind this quote is to emphasize the praise and glory that Bernard is given by others who even dare to speak his name. In addition to this, Huxley describes his reaction towards his amicable relationships with others in his society based on his position, when he states, “...astonished, but at the same time touched by this strange tribute to her power. ”(58). This means that Bernard is perplexed by others' actions and thoughts regarding him, but he is pleased by it to some extent.

Actions: Things you do

Bernard is expected to follow certain actions that portray his likeness and distaste for other factions who are below his according to the pyramid of power. Huxley portrays Bernard's favoring of other factions as he states, "Bernard also laughed; after two grammes of soma the joke seemed, for some reason, good.” (106). This is significant since it portrays how others in the similar community were programed to dislike and enjoy certain people's presence. In addition to this, Huxley states that Bernard underwent, "Alternate Thursdays were Bernard’s Solidarity Service Days.” (78). This is relevant for the reader to characterize the general routine for many individuals living under that controlled community.

Speech: Things you say

In addition to Bernard's personality characteristics, Huxley portrays Bernard's complex mind that differentiates from the controlled society since he was able to formulate thoughts or even his own responses while others were programmed to say certain things to the lower social groups in which they dislike. For example, Bernard states," He’s old, that’s all,” Bernard answered as carelessly as he could." (57). This is significant in the way that he was able to formulate his own feelings towards an event that occurred. In addition to this, Bernard states," Five hundred reparations once a week from thirteen to seventeen." (101). This caused many to question what he said and responded in the way that their creators programmed them to respond when something is out of the ordinary. Huxley also portrays Bernard's character as peaceful since he wishes to keep the peace.
