Providence officially became a new colony in 1663 after the King of England granted them a charter. .editmore_horizIn-text Citation

AlchinSit, Linda. “Rhode Island Colony.” Rhode Island Colony ***, Siteseen Ltd, Feb. 2017, www.landofthebrave.info/rhode-island-colony.htm.editmore_horizIn-text Citation

“Log In.” Britannica School, Encyclopedia Briticanna, 2017, school.eb.com/levels/middle/article/Rhode-Island/345520.

There were many mountains, trees, and rivers, but there was poor soil to farm on and is not suitable for crops. There were Mild, Short summers and long, and cold winters in Rhode Island. There are flat rolling hills and lowlands. There is less disease in the colony than in the warmer colonies down south.
Alchin, Linda. “Rhode Island Colony.” Rhode Island Colony ***, Land Of the Brave, 12 Sept. 2017, www.landofthebrave.info/rhode-island-colony.htm.

Most of the people who lived in Rhode Island had no religious freedom whatsoever. The Puritan people had complete control over the areas and if you were not a Puritan, they would not tolerate you living in the area. In fact, some people like Ann Hutchinson were banished for their beliefs. The original reason as to how they got to be that way was England. The angelic church was a reform movement to completely get rid of the church of corruption. The Puritans believed that religion should be part of society and the government, while others believed that a government should remain unbiased and you would be able to choose whether or not you wished to adopt a certain religion into your personal lives. However, in the end the people seeking religious freedom won out and people like Jews and Catholics were granted it.

Source:

“Colonial Rhode Island.” Colonial Rhode Island ***, www.landofthebrave.info/colonial-rhode-island.htm

Since Rhode Island is on the coast, people made their living off of fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. They had no modern lights, but whale oil could be used for lamps which is why whaling was a way of making a living. However farming for them was very difficult because of the soil, but some plants like corn could be planted. This was a downside of their economy, they gave up the profit of farming for ocean/lake related activities.

The industries where, agriculture, (livestock and dairy fishing.) There were also some breweries producing rum. Rhode Island had, corn, pumpkins, rye, squash and beans. They were raised even with the harsh growing conditions.
Other natural resources are, fish, whale and forests. For trade they mostly traded with other New England colonies for the natural resources they didn't have, in return they gave fish, whiskey, and beer.

Alchin, Linda. “Rhode Island Colony.” Rhode Island Colony ***, Land of the Brave, 12 Sept. 2017, www.landofthebrave.info/rhode-island-colony.htm.
