My piece, Stand Up, Be Heard, is a photograph I shot at a protest in Downtown Los Angeles. Community members were making their voices heard after a scandal involving racist comments by some LA City Council members. Finding your voice is a powerful way to spark change, and stand up for what you believe. What began as songwriting transformed into poetry, a method of expressing myself and my beliefs to the world. I wrote these lyrics in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling on abortion rights, when voicing my anger through words failed. I am a senior who paints murals on doors and all over the south bay, and I find myself having to explain my love and passion for art. By choosing my favorite quotes that show the importance of expressing creativity, I used my voice to show how being your authentic self is how you find your true passion. I made the quote, "The Earth Without Art is Just Eh" the largest because is speaks to the importance that a world without art would be miserable and the correct grammar of the quote adds a relatable humor for all age ranges to grasp. My art piece is a sketch of a female Iranian advocate publicly cutting her hair as she speaks into the microphone to her community. This small scene represents the many protests occurring around the world for the women of Iran who, after years of being mistreated, have finally found their voice to fight for equal rights and are advocating for the several young women who have been killed by the Tehran morality police for “breaking the law” due to their hair not being fully covered with their hijab, or headscarf. The world is a beautiful place and this piece illustrates a mostly environmental theme with humans only being a small part. My piece is a surrealist collage, themed around corrupted authority figures and their effects on children. It depicts a large head, labeled as "Mommy", which has lost its senses, crossed out by permanent ink, yet described as “Models of Behavior”. It also shows a white figure meant to be a developing child, protected from “Mommy” by a wall of dirited children. The figure is thinking of “Wishes, Fantasies, Dreams,” crossed out by pensil, damaged but not unrecoverable. My voice is essential to my survival, I can speak and tell you in an articulate fashion that this is my self portrait. Having dyslexia makes it difficult for me to take the words I have in my head and put them on paper, I realized when I drew this I misspelled the word portrait, but using my imagination is about finding my voice even if it is imperfect and misspelled. As a child, I've always been taught to speak out against unjust acts, "see something, say something." The older I get, the less I see people practicing what they preach, and the less I do to help. One of the many regrets I have is not speaking out for the people who needed my help.
