En 2019, el camarón ecuatoriano fue nuestro primer producto no petrolero exportable, mismo año en el que las exportaciones a China crecieron en un 249% comparada con 2018.

Las exportaciones de camarón en el período enero a mayo del 2020 fueron de $1.663 millones representando un crecimiento del 12% comparada con el mismo período del año 2019.

La producción de camarón representa un incremento anual del 16%.

el sector acuícola continúe siendo uno de los pilares de la producción, generando ingresos e impulsando la economía nacional

Se ha revisado un pronóstico inicial de crecimiento de las exportaciones del 20% en 2020 a un aumento del 6% con respecto a 2019.

Este fue un duro golpe para las exportaciones de camarón Ecuatoriano porque el mercado Chino representa el 65% de las exportaciones totales. Detuvieron sus envíos a China y en muchos casos, devolvieron sus contenedores a Ecuador. 

Representó gastos adicionales de hasta un 25%, dependiendo de la ubicación y el tamaño de la empresa.

Dos meses de descensos en las exportaciones a China, cayendo a una contracción del 70%  en comparación con el promedio mensual de los seis meses anteriores.

Para el cuarto trimestre de 2020, se espera que las exportaciones muestren un crecimiento que nos permitirá cerrar el año en un 6% por encima de 2019. Consumidores Chinos comiencen a recuperar la confianza en el camarón Ecuatoriano en los próximos meses

2015 en Ecuador hay unas 210 000 hectáreas dedicadas al camarón; de estas el 60% está en Guayas, el 15% en El Oro y el 9% en Esmeraldas. Otro 9% está en Manabí y 7% en Santa Elena.

El 60% de las hectáreas de camaroneras están en Guayas, el 15% en El Oro.

El total de ingresos generados por las empresas que conforman el sector, el 66% corresponde a la cría de camarón, el 24% responde a empresas dedicadas al procesamiento y conserva de camarón. 

En su composición el 5% de las empresas son grandes, el 38% medianas y el 57% corresponde a micro y pequeñas empresas. Las 25 compañías más grandes concentran el 71% del total del ingreso.

La pesquería de camarón surge como medio de subsistencia (ámbito artesanal) y luego se transforma en una importante fuente generadora de plazas de trabajo y de divisas para la economía del país (ámbito industrial).

Según cifras del Banco Mundial, desde el segundo semestre del 2017 se ha experimentado una reducción sostenida de los precios internacionales, bajando de USD 14,7 a USD 12 por kilo.

La mayor razón es el exceso de oferta a nivel mundial y pese a que los precios se han recuperado ligeramente, expertos de la industria aseguran que durante 2019 se mantendrán por abajo de los USD 13, afectando el margen de rentabilidad del producto.

Crecimiento promedio del 13,6% en los últimos 10 años, ha sido de los pocos sectores que evolucionaron pese a la recesión de 2016 (con una tasa de 8,2%)

El año 2014, registró una expansión del 40% y si bien el sector se desaceleró, al tercer trimestre de 2018 registró una tasa de crecimiento anual del 7%, constituyéndose en el sector de mayor crecimiento del país.

Por estas razones se ha convertido en un sector estratégico y uno de los principales receptores de inversión privada.
