Located 3 km south of Hoa Lu ancient capital, 7 km from Ninh Binh city to the west, Trang An covers an area of about 7,000 ha and Hoa Lu – the ancient capital of Vietnam. It is made up of limestone ridges, mysterious caves, valleys, rivers, and dozens of historical sites.

Cultural value is one of the most value features in Trang An. Archaeologists have discovered signs of human activity dating back almost 30,000 years in this area. Through a long story, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is home to many temples, pagodas, and places of worship, which are constructed solemnly among dark green woods. Of all the pagodas, Bai Dinh is the most special one with unique architecture and long history. There are also other temples such as the Trinh Temple, The Four Pillars Temple, Khong Palace, etc. You will see lots of Vietnamese people coming here in the first month of Lunar New Year to pray for a wealthier and happier year.

Besides these culture values, Trang An is also famous for its natural beauty. Tam Coc - Bich Dong, natural scenic landscape and ecological site, is one of the major factors that makes this beauty. It consists of two distinct attractions. The first one is Tam Coc, a flooded cave krast system. The name “Tam Coc” is literally "three caves", consists of three natural caves — Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba — on the Ngo Dong Rive. The other one is Bich Dong, a series of mountain pagoda built in 1428. Moreover, there is a magnificent landscape of limestone mountain tops surrounded by valleys, steep rocks, golden paddle fields and blooming jungles. It is also one of Trang An’s geological values.

Trang An terrestrial ecosystem has more than 600 species of plants, 200 species of animals, many of which are in Vietnam's red list, and the aquatic ecosystem consists of about 70 species. All of them are well-preserved. This is also another tourist attraction because when you come to Trang An, you will see some species that you’ve never seen it yet.

Having met UNESCO criteria for outstanding universal value to humanity, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex was added to the World Heritage Site List in 2014 as a mixed natural and cultural property.

The recognition is granted based on the principles of the Convention on the Protection of World Culture and Natural Heritages including cultural, aesthetical, and geological-geomorphic values and the preservation of heritage.

Hoa Lu Ancient Citadel is a national relic related to the three dynasties in feudal history of Viet Nam (Dinh, Le and Ly dynasties in the 10th and 11th centuries).
