In 2009, Australia's population was estimated to be 22 million people, and it's increased by about 1.6% since 2001. A country’s population is never fixed. The reasons population numbers fluctuate include natural growth, migration and demographic changes. In addition to this, the spatial distribution of the country’s population changes are mostly influenced by personal preferences, life stages, the environment and the economy.

A large majority of migration occurs within cities, often driven by housing and accessibility circumstances. E.g, most of the migration to outer suburbs between 2001 and 2006 has been intracity migration. Yet while these changes may be greater in number, important variations in inter regional flows are shaping the spatial population pattern of the nation.

The population moves from rural country areas such as Taradale to urban areas like Sydney The main cause of urbanisation is an array of things including climate, job opportunities, land use, convenience of being so close to people and shops and perception of liveability.
