Calvinism is a branch of Christianity set down by John Calvin. All Puritans share similar Calvinist beliefs including predestination, grace, and total depravity. The Puritans strongly believed that Satan was real and was the cause of all things bad. They believed that Witches and Wizards were sent by the devil which majorly increased the scare. The Puritans saw the elimination of witches to be the best solution.

If he or she was in pain or shed blood they were not a witch. However, If there was no pain or blood they were considered a witch. Another popular test was the swimming test. Puritans believed that water rejects evil meaning a witch would float and an innocent person would sink.

Salem today remains a popular tourist attraction because of its creepy and supernatural history.

The trials started when young girls were experiencing feelings of sickness, suicide, and hysteria without having any real diagnoses besides what was concluded to be possessed by witches. Those who were accused of being the cause of these symptoms were then taken to court. In court, the ones accused were either marked guilty or not as being a witch. Over 200 people were accused.

City Upon A Hill

The phrase, "A City Upon A Hill" came from the Puritan's desire to live in a Utopia. The Puritans settled in Massachusetts in hopes of starting a society that had a large presence of God. They wanted to live in a society that perfectly represented the scriptures in the Bible and had God as the center of everything. They believed that God should be present and taught in homes, in the government, and schools. Their idea of "A City Upon A Hill" was supposed to set an example for other God-fearing communities to follow.
