West End is an inner city suburb of Southern Brisbane and is surrounded by the Brisbane River. It lies 15 minutes south west from the CBD.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the population was recorded as 8,061 people. Family households account for 52.4% of the population, with an average age 2 years below the Australian average, making this a youthful suburb.

The percentage of "high-density dwellings" is increasing steadily (currently 35%). This could have implications for the way that the community is changing. It's going from a more family-based, sort of neighborhood style living to student accommodation and apartments, which are more conducive to singles and young people. Through having an online community about West End, it allows the populations within West End communicate in such a way that allows them to be virtually involved with the area, leading to potential relationships to be formed within the area.

I asked 16 current West End residents to give me a word or words to describe their neighbourhood. The resulting word art reveals the common threads that run through collective conceptions of West End: community, development, convenience, multiculturalism and its hipster-ness. If a community is only as real and cohesive as it is imagined to be, West End residents, in their self-conscious reference to community, show a very strong sense of being a collective. The prevalence of the word 'developing' reflects residents' knowledge of the dynamic and ephemeral nature of what makes up their neighbourhood, including the demographics and the built environment. Indeed, as more high-rise complexes are built in West End, this will yield rapid changes to both. Being an inner-city suburb, residents also cite its convenience as a major facet. Finally, West End is conceived as a multicultural and hipster neighbourhood, speaking both to the visibility of different ethnicities and their cultures (in shops, art, etc.) within the community, as well as the thriving café culture that attracts young people and families from all over Brisbane. Overall, from the results of the word art, it is evident that West End is a vibrant and collectively imagined community whose strength lies in its diversity.

The park comes with a rich heritage, with the Aboriginal community occupying the park for most of it's time carrying out ceremonies, marriage exchanges, trade ceremonies and as a meeting place. It is now home to a major Cultural Center which highlights Aboriginal history and celebrates their traditions (Capelin, 2012). Additionally, it is one of the oldest public parks Brisbane has, which is also home to the annual Greek Festival and NAIDOC week festivities.

According to the Queensland council of social services in a survey taken in 2011 1-in-40 people in the inner Brisbane suburbs are homeless, with West End being the most heavily populated.

Community Friends - runs a free food stall for the homeless every week.

Micah Projects - Advocates for the justice of the homeless

The building underneath, while looking like a regular apartment block is actually a part of a nationwide homeless service called Common grounds. It provides 146 units for homeless and low-income owners, in an initiative to help those displaced by major development in the West End and region.
