What I Did Well: Once I started to use a loose stroke and not feel the need to be as detailed, my pieces became better. I liked the green that I added to the mountain scape more than the would-be buildings. I also like how when I added more water to the green it blended into the brown. At first I did not like this, but I like how the print turned out more natural looking.
What I Need to Change: I need to remember to add water. I did not use enough water when I used the oil paint, so the print appears blotchy and rough. On the other hand, I do not think I used enough paint, for there are many blank spaces. Also, I had thought that the while space between the cliff face and the sky would look like buildings. After replacing the blank space with green, I think it looks much better and more organic looking.

What I did Well: I really liked making this print. I like the contrasting colors I used, and I liked that the prints came out bubbly and textured. Also, I like that the print looks light and fun, but has the format of something that was planned out (to some extent). While working on these prints, I was able to change my water to paint ratio. By using slightly runny water color, and drawing on with a thin line, I got the desired effect (i.e. the first and sixth cards shown). Also, I learned that I like to use the water color paints more.
What I Need to Change: While making these prints, I was able to toy with and alter my paint to water ratio. I still need to improve this, but I was able to figure out a ratio that worked. Also, I need to change how much paint I use at one time. In the future, I will use less paint on the plastic sheet. The more watery paint I used, the more my letters spread out on the press (i.e. prints two and three).

What I Did Well: I think that I traced the image well. I think the bird on the wire turned out nicely.
What I Need to Change: I only did this print twice; the second being a ghost print. Neither one turned out like how I expected it to. In the original monoprint, I used too much paint and not enough water. Had I done this print again, I would have taken out my initials (I assumed they would have blended in more), taken out the rocky horizon, and made the whole background a more organic looking sky.

MonoPrint With and Without Edits— Notes

How much ink to use: Less is more. It should seem like there is not enough ink on your bench press. The coating on the brayer should be very thin, just thick enough to roll, but not so you are just pushing the ink around. When touched, the ink layer should feel similar to the back of a sticker: a tad sticky, but not gooey. I think I did a good job of using the correct amount of ink. Sometimes I did not use enough ink and my print ended up looking bare (Print #). On the other hand, sometimes when mixing colors, I went overboard and I had too much chatter around my lines (Print #). In general, I got the desired amount of chatter. Some splotches, but the main print was still visible. I liked how when I pressed my finger onto the paper, I would get spots of soft chatter (I did this around the plants in Print #). In the future I need to pick a more challenging print. After a few practice tries (Prints #-#), I was able to print the signs well.

I liked the challenge of doing the lines of the reclining man (whose face I accidently covered with a palm tree), the shopping cart, and the place setting. I also liked the challenge of printing on abnormal paper. I found it very difficult to print on my shaving cream designed paper. I either did not use enough paint or I did not press hard enough, but either way the animals hardly showed up. Again, I realized that I like the challenge of using lettering. My first attempt was a failure (Print #), but my collage-esque animal print worked great! I purposely wrote “BACKWARDS” backwards and “UPSIDE DOWN” right side up. I did this because the background is warped and the animals are upside down. I thought it would come across as a fantasy.

All the the prints that I completed on the left are the unaltered reduction linocut prints. I realized that some ink colors work better than others, and that small amounts of ink do not work well. Also along those lines, when I use the same ink twice to try to get a ghost print it does not work (seen on the brown paper print).
