2021: On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military (also known as the Tatmadaw) overthrew the democratically elected government led by civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The coup ended a decade of civilian and democratic rule in the country.

Protests and Civil Resistance: Following the coup, massive protests erupted across the country led by civilians and civil organizations in an effort to restore democracy. The military responded with violence, using lethal force and repression to quell peaceful demonstrations.

Internal Displacement and Refugees: The military's violence and repression led to a significant increase in internal displacement in Myanmar, with many people fleeing their homes to seek safety in other parts of the country or in makeshift camps. Furthermore, ongoing violence and instability continued to drive many people to flee abroad as refugees.

Attacks against Ethnic Minorities: Myanmar is ethnically and religiously diverse. Prior to the coup, tensions and conflicts already existed between the central government and various ethnic minorities. After the coup, the military escalated attacks against some of these minorities in different regions of the country, including states like Kachin, Shan, and Rakhine.

Violence against the Rohingya Population: One of the most notorious conflicts in Myanmar has been the persecution of the Rohingya ethnic minority. In 2017, the military carried out a brutal military campaign that resulted in the exodus of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to Bangladesh. Although this occurred before 2021, it is important to mention it as part of the context of ethnic violence in the country.
