Britain was the leading empire (or colonial nation) in the 17th and 18th century, as well as the leader of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, and in late 19th and 20th century, America was the leading economic power whilst being on the forefront of the electronic and digital revolution of the late 20th century. 
It has also proven itself to be one of the most flexible and resilient languages, because of its ability to adapt and absorb different vocabularies from other countries and cultures. It has survived influence by invading armies, and potential extinction. It has survived the temper of the times, and it has grown even stronger in the process of doing so.
