1. Flatten a piece of clay, large enough for a jar, on the table
2 . Place a tea light candle in the center of the clay
3 . Put goggles on for safety
4. Use a match to light the candle be careful when lighting the match's keep sleeves, hair, fingers, and objects away from the flame.
5.Blow out the match and put the match into the petri dish. Be careful not to drop the match.
6.At the same time turn the jar upside down over the lit candle and start the stopwatch . When placing the jar over the candle , press the jar into the clay to make a seal. this is the control.
7. Make observations about the flame. Record in observations section. remember to use details.
8. Time until the flame goes out. record time in seconds in the data table.
9. Remove the jar from the candle.
10. Carefully rinse and dry the jar. caution: use glassware safety.
11. Repeat steps 4-10 two times for a total of three trails for accuracy.
12. Find the average of three trials: add all three numbers and divide by three, Record on the data table.

conclusion

I was testing If one candle or two candles would burn for a longer amount of time. I tested if one candle or two candles would burn longer. My control was one candle and my variable was two candles. That two candles used up more oxygen than one candle so, one candle burned longer.

My hypothesis was if 1 candle or 2 candles are lit under a glass jar the it will burn longer because it won't use as much O2 then 2 candles will .My hypothesis was correct because one candle burned longer. My averages was one candle: 1:16 Two candle: 46 seconds. I did not notice any patterns. I discovered that one candle burned longer because it took up less oxygen than two candles.

A possibal source of air is that there could have been holes in the clay or the jar could have been wet. I noticed that the jar was damp. They could have affected the time because if the flame got wet it could be put out. I could have dried he jar better. So that you can do better.

This experiment was important to work on in relation to understanding the CO2/ O2 Cycle is because you need to understand why the candle would go out in the jar faster if it was one candle or two candles. This is important in the real world because if plants didn't give off oxygen that we need and we need and we didn't give off CO2 witch plants need then we wouldn't survive. A different experiment I could test with the CO2 O2 cycle is that you could start a fire on your stove top and poor that gas that my amazing teacher Mrs. Macpherson made and see what would happen to the flame.I would choose that test because it looked really easy to do. Learning about the CO2/O2 cycle is important because I think everyone should know why plants and people need each other.
