2. How did the atomic bomb help destroy a friendship between the US and USSR? When would the Soviets test their own bomb?

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused more distrust between USSR and the US because the US didn’t tell USSR that they were gonna drop the bomb, but they did know that they had an atomic bomb. This added onto the list of problems between the two countries, like the communist expansion and the US interference in European affairs. The Soviets created and tested their own atomic bomb in 1949.

An ICBM is an intercontinental ballistic missile. These missiles had a large range and could travel nearly everywhere. This added a lot of power to the arms race. The US and the USSR both had developed these missiles and produced them in large amounts.

4. Why did the US believe they had a Missile Gap in the Cold War?

The US believed they had a Missile Gap because they thought that the USSR had more advanced weapons and weapons in greater numbers, and this idea was used in the elections so words and worries spread. This theory started after the USSR launched Sputnik into space.

5. What did the Cuban Missile Crisis have to do with the US and USSR? How would this be an important moment in the arms race?

The US tried to overthrow Cuba’s current leader, Fidel Castro, but failed so Castro turned to the USSR for assistance. Once Cuba had missiles aimed towards Florida, the US panicked. This was an important moment in the arms race because President Kennedy and USSR leader Khruschev exchanged handheld letters with each other to sort the issue.
