Due by Wed., May 1=question 1
1. Use chp 3, pg 29, read 1st full paragraph and answer--What does this detail suggest about the role of the announcements in Jonas’s community? Be specific and support your answer.
YOUR ANSWER-- The role of making announcements is to point out the mistakes in the community is to the people in the community feel pressured to be perfect because the community is a perfect utopia.(authors viewpoint= publicly shame people so they obey the rules)
2. Jonas’s community is highly regulated with rules. Read the sections about the rule against bragging (34). Answer and support-- What is the rule’s purpose in the community? Why does it exist? What impact does the rule have on the community?
YOUR ANSWER--Since the community is a perfect world (utopia) they have the rule of no bragging because they want everyone to feel the same and equal. The impact on the community is that no one is being made felt that they are less then someone.
3. Which narrative point of view (POV) is used in The Giver? Use pg 67 to support your answer with text evidence with the sentence from the novel that proves the POV you chose.
YOUR ANSWER-- Third person limited because on page 66-67 the author writes, ¨Jonas was certainly glad that that Assignment was taken; he wouldn´t have wanted it.

QUESTION #4--DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 8.
Use p. 82: How does Jonas feel upon leaving the auditorium? Which words make you think that? (support your answer)
YOUR ANSWER--Jonas´ felt separate, different, and apart upon leaving the auditorium. On page 82 the narrator says ¨ Now for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate, different.¨ Also the narrator says ¨ But his training had not yet begun.....¨
QUESTION #5
How has Jonas’s attitude shifted slightly in chapter twelve? Make sure to explain your answer using details from the text. Use chapter 12. HINT-Keep this in mind as you think about a new symbol to symbolize Jonas in the Middle of the Novel.
YOUR ANSWER--Jonas´s attitude shifted slightly in chapter 12 because before he had been nervous but now he has more freedom, less shy, more confident, alone and apart from his friends, gaining wisdom, more comfortable with training. ¨I really think I like this more than school.¨ pg 114

#6 A. Protagonist = the central character in a story. Example= Cinderella

B. Antagonist= the opposing force or character who leads the conflict against the protagonist.
Example= Evil stepmother and stepsisters,

C. Protagonist= Jonas. The protagonist is Jonas because he is the main character in the book. The main focus in the book is on Jonas.
Antagonist= The bad memories. I think the bad memories are the antagonist because they mess with Jonas´s head, take away his childhood, and make him separate from his friends. (pg. 168) ¨Don´t play it anymore,¨ Jonas pleaded.

I think the climax of the story is when Jonas and Gabriel escape the community. I think this is the climax because it is explaining so much about the community. It explains that the community is isolated away from the rest of the world. Hiding from the pain. In The Giver, the quote that stands out to me is "This is my fight song, take back my life song,"
written by Rachel Platten. When Jonas and Gabe escape the community to Elsewhere Jonas is fighting for his life and Gabriel's too. This quote from the song is an example of how Jonas was determined to fight to get out of the hated community.

The resolution for The Giver is that since Jonas and Gabe escape the community the memories got released into the community and the citizen now have the memories. A song that represents the resolution in The Giver is "They don't care about us" by Micheal Jackson. At first Jonas is excepting of the community but now he is against everything the community does, he thinks that the community is a terrible place, that they don't really care about the citizens, and wants all the people that he cares about to have the memories with him. In the end Jonas escapes the community releasing the memories so everyone could have them and begins his new life in the outside world.

The Giver gave Jonas the memory of a birthday party but it was about a child singled out and on his celebrated day. pg 153. But I wrote about Jonas being the birthday boy.

"Lie down I am going to give you a memory of a birthday party." The Giver said. Jonas closed his eyes and entered the memory. Jonas found himself sitting in a colorful room full of adults talking and children playing. The room had red and blue balloons in the corners, banners saying "Happy Birthday!", and toys spilt everywhere. The table in front of Jonas had a blue tablecloth, plates, and juice boxes. Suddenly Jonas heard a voice behind him "Everyone come sit at the table we are going to sing happy birthday." All the kids came running up to the table waiting to sing, the adults also stopped talking and stared at Jonas. A round food with some sort of blue cream, wax sticks with fire on them, and writing saying Happy Birthday. The kids and adults all started to sing "Happy Birthday to you..." But Jonas did not pay attention to the song he was deep in thought. What are those wax sticks with fire on top of them? What is a birthday? To soon the kids and adults stopped singing and the woman behind him said "Come on make a wish and blow out the candles!" Candles? What are candles? Are those the wax sticks on top of the mysterious food? They must be since the woman said blow and so Jonas blew out the candles as everyone was watching him. Once he did everyone started clapping happily. Jonas started smiling like crazy, he did not know why. It wasn't the same feeling that had happened in the ceremony of twelve but a new feeling. Although Jonas did not know the word for it he liked this feeling. Then he heard an adult say "Who wants some cake?" In an enthusiastic voice picking up the cake. "ME!!" All of the kids saying running after the adult. In the back he could hear the adult saying "slow down kiddos your going to knock over the cake," chuckling. Jonas stayed in his seat from a moment deep in thought again. Cake? That's what it's called cake. What a funny word for a food. Jonas chuckled at the word cake repeating it over and over again in his mind. As soon as Jonas was going to get up he saw the woman that was standing behind him. She grabbed Jonas into a big hug and then pulled away taking Jonas's face into she soft hands. "Happy twelfth birthday," she said with tears in her eyes "time flies by so fast." "I remember you being a two year old and now look at you your twelve years old." More tears swelling up in her eyes and Jonas pulled her into a hug. Why was he doing this? He didn't know this woman. But it sounded like she was he guardian. Jonas felt tears swelling up in his eyes he tried to push them back but he just couldn't. Hot tears fell down his face. Why was he crying? He had this feeling that never knew that existed. But what was it called? Oh how Jonas longed to know what the word for this feeling is. Then suddenly the word came to him. This was the feeling of being cared for. Jonas was now back in the Annex room, face still wet with tears. Not tears of sadness but tears of happiness. THE END

I choose this memory because the community does not have birthdays and since The Giver gave Jonas the memory of Christmas and I thought that a birthday party would tie along with that memory.
