Debt Avalanche - Definition and Advantages

New Era Asset Management assists creditors in recovering balances due. New Era Asset Management contacts debtors and works with them to develop billing plans while consistently maintaining respectful communications and upholding the dignity of the consumer.

In general, many debt experts recommend that debtors follow one of two methods to pay off past due balances. The first is the debt snowball, in which the debtor pays off the smallest debt first and then moves on to the next smallest. The debt avalanche, by contrast, targets those balances with the highest interest rate.

The debt avalanche strategy begins when the debtor lists out the interest rates on all debts. The debtor then pays the minimum on all debts other than the one with the highest interest rate, which receives the minimum payment plus any additional funds that his or her monthly budget allows for debt payoff. When the highest interest debt is gone, the debtor allocates budgeted payoff funds as well as the high-interest debt's former minimum toward the bill with the next highest interest rate.

Advocates of the debt avalanche approach point out that paying high-interest balances will cause less interest to accrue, thus saving the debtor money in the long run. This is particularly true when the debt is old enough that the interest has compounded and become part of the principal balance, thus generating interest of its own. It is a strategy particularly well suited to those who prioritize saving money, though it can be challenging for those who like to see quick results.
