In the novel Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson it takes place in 1793. There are several time periods and many events that show the setting. There setting is very different from our setting. "Mother snapped open the shutters and heat poured into our bedchamber"(Anderson 1). Back then, they called beds bedchambers but in our life now they are called bedrooms and we don't have shutters the snap open. Back then they did not have any money or anything and that this takes place in the past. The setting helps understand that they were poor and had no money and their life is very different from our life now.

Lucille wants to protect Matilda and control her life and wants to fulfill her own aspirations for Matilda's future. "What about the funeral?"

In the novel Fever 1793 the minor character is her mom Lucille. I would describe her as a person that is trying to make everything stay in place and she is demanding sometimes."Get out of bed, Matilda," she continued. "You're sleeping the day away." She shook my shoulder. "Polly's late and there's work to be done"(Anderson 1). Her mom wants her to do all the rules she has and follow her demands and work hard and make sure all her work is done and she wants everything to be in place her way. As the yellow fever epidemic begins to spread through the city, Lucille becomes increasingly concerned about the safety of her family and their business. She is depicted as protective and sometimes overbearing, reflecting her desire to shield Matilda from the dangers of the world. Lucille wants to make sure everyone is following her rules and doing it as she says, and wants to protect her and make sure she is safe and not getting hurt.

stereotypes

in the novel Fever 1793, the author creates a character that shows a stereotype in Mattie. In this time period women and men had different roles. Women were expected to get a husband by the time they are teenagers. In one part of the story grandpa says to her "We'll have to find a husband for you"(Anderson 19). This is important because it shows the role of women to marry young in the time period. Mattie is not happy about this because she is too young and thinks it's unfair. To conclude, in the time period women and men have different roles then today.

In the novel Fever 1793, a motif for this book is death because Mattie and her family are suffering from a disease that's called fever. The yellow fever epidemic brings death to Philadelphia, taking the lives of many people around Mattie, including friends, neighbors, and even members of her own family. This fever has changed her life so she realizes she needs to grow up. She goes from being a normal teenager to someone who must make difficult decisions and care for others. "Some doctors warn we may see a thousand dead before it's over. There are forty-thousand people living in Philadelphia, William. Can you imagine if one in forty were to die?"(Anderson 59).This quote shows how serious and widespread the death is, and it emphasizes how much Mattie has to face at a young age. Death is more than just a part in the story it shows who Mattie becomes and inspires her to help others.

In the novel Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, a theme in this book is people face many struggles and try to find ways to overcome them. The main character, Matilda, goes through many challenges during the yellow fever epidemic. She must learn how to survive on her own after being separated from her family. She learns to take on new roles and responsibilities, like running the coffeehouse and caring for others. These experiences show how facing difficulties can help a person grow and become more mature.

The novel, Fever 1793 is a historical novel that happened during the Yellow Fever epidemic that swept through Philadelphia in 1793. It became one of the most popular novels in the early 2000's. The story follows 14-year-old Matilda Cook as she suffers from the fever and her mom. As the city falls into panic, Matilda faces many challenges that force her to grow up quickly. The minor characters are Eliza, grandfather and Lucille Matilda's mom they play important roles in showing their strength to the community and showing kindness during hard times. Their actions help Matilda grow and become more mature. I give it 5 stars because it wants us to know that this was a major moment in American history and how much Matilda cared for others and how this event impacted peoples lives.
