Patient Zero Summary

Patient Zero is a story that is based off of young boy named Jay’s journal entries. Jay is a special patient with Virus-J. He is the only patient to have successfully recovered from this virus. For most of his life, he has been contained in a room where his only visitors are equipped with hazmat suits. His whole family passed away from Virus -J which leaves him with Mrs. Manigat, the next closest thing to family. Jay is a curious boy who has a lot of time to think. He often wonders about the outside world, and if he will ever get to see it again. Jay starts to get suspicious as to why his doctors start to come by less, but Mrs. Manigat doesn’t leave him in the dark. She instructs him to leave if no one checks on him, and that is what he does. He leaves the abandoned hospital and never comes back.

I think one of the issues “Patient Zero” is referring to is how hospitals and the medical industry want to make money. I think people are more worried about making money that actually getting better. I also think that you can look at it through the lens of COVID and the whole pandemic. At first COVID was some deadly virus where we were advised to stay away from our own families on holidays and now it has magically disappeared because someone tells you that it is alright. I think that this goes hand and hand with Jay, because who knows if he really needed to be kept in that room all along, and if they were just using him for medical research purposes.

The Den of Horrors makes up a town of underprivileged beggars. These beggars live in some of the most inhuman conditions. The streets are filled with cesspools and children looking for their next meal. Houses were crowded with twenty people and there was often many incidents of incest. Franny and Harry are two siblings who didn’t meet their goal for the day and get beat by their mother. She suggests to her husband that they rip Fran’s eyes out so they can profit on her “illness”.

One of the issues that the Den of Horrors focuses on is the problems that go along with poverty. It takes a look into the disgusting living conditions. There is no such thing as having clean clothes or even something as basic as running water. It also shines a light of the lengths that people will go to, to earn money. They will go as far as sacrificing their children with no remorse. Money seems to take over their thoughts and that is the only thing they care about.

The movie starts out when a couple travels to Sweden to join in on a week long family ritual. As soon as they get there, they notice they are in some sort of utopia. Every little detail is perfect. This throws off the newcomers, and they start to notice other things that are off. They soon realize that they have entered a satanic cult gathering. Human and animal sacrifices are made on the daily. They also undergo traumatic cult rituals. All of the original members drop like flys due to their selfish choices. The final member is turned into one of the cult followers by the end and never ends up making it out.

Midsommar could be used to describe a lot of societal issues. The most apparent one would be the effect that religion has on people. Some religious groups are extremely strict with their rules and ways of life. It makes people within the religion think that their is only one way of life, and anyone who goes against it is wrong. It takes away from promoting open mindedness and learning about other ways of life. The next issue is the extreme lengths that people will go to, to prove their faithfulness. In some religions, whatever the “master” says, goes. Their followers don’t even stop and ask themselves, “Is this wrong?”.

Horror movies are used to prey upon our insecurities, rational and irrational fears. They make uncomfortable topics easier to talk about. It also puts the main issue in a different light and makes people think about the issues that come along with it. Everyone is attracted to a scary movie with gory visuals.
