It was a great refresher for the content on ELD and identifying the difference between grade-level content and ELD instruction. The backward mapping is a great strategy for pacing and instruction because it allows me to review content before presenting it to my students.

By having to restate it in your own words, it helped me truly understand the learning goals on and internalize them. The practice helped me understand how to break down each part and how much to spend on, ex the practice part and the application part. My key take away is you cannot have enough choral reading, especially with beginning levels. Also, use a timer to ensure students are getting the most out of the practice and application time.

I got many take-aways from this week that will move my practice of ELD forward. I will do data chats in the classroom with those students who are close to reclassifying and have them take charge of their learning. I will also be utilizing tools from the ELD kit and strategies in my classroom. I will be more intentional about lesson planning for ELD, making sure that I will have enough time to get through the most important parts of the lesson. Lastly, I will push for more ELD LSF's to share all I have learned this week with teachers. It is very important and the foundation of everything we do in the classroom with majority of our students. This week has been such an eye opener for me! I am excited to teach ELD this year and bring all of what I have learned into the classroom.

A take-away from the week that will move my practice forward is just how much of a key role I have as an ELD teacher. Each year students are expected to learn and practice certain language functions, although I used to think that the content was soooo repetitive, I know understand the importance of the intentional repetition. It is my job to thoroughly analyze the new language patterns that my students are expected to learn and assist them to meet reclassification goals. :) One thing I will be changing this upcoming school year is the use of data chats with my EL students.

A key takeaway, as an instructor, I will take from this week's ELD information. Is it that the more students practice speaking, they should be able to write. As an instructor, I need to make sure that my students have ample opportunities for students to use the language that they learn through various areas of content, not just ELD. Another takeaway is to use ELD tools and resources in the content area to support both ELLs and EO to help structure their language for academic use. For example, sentence stems, game board, and discussion cards. Just like my ELLs, teachers should also have modeled lessons on how to use resources, so they could apply new strategies or tools in different areas of learning.

A huge take away for me is the backward planning! As teachers, we need to take the time to backwards plan to better teach and prepare our students. They need to know the why we teach what we teach. We need to reinforce language in a positive and productive way, where students can bring their language skills to other classes and academic subjects. Cheering our students to be successful in English, and also, encouraging them to be fluent in their first language should be one of the best things we can do for them.

A key take away from this event is that I can present more to the teachers that serve in our district. The methods shared in progression give light to the whole progress of the program. The practice of the engagement keeps the engagement going throughout the lessons. The miles on the tongue and the metlinguistic Awareness:

It has been fantastic to learn with others and from others in the group. Thank you Aide for all you bring to us in this fantastic EL Achieve session.
