         <description><![CDATA[<p>Summary: After spending every summer together at their well-loved island Winlock Harbor, Grayson, Mike, and Ian return to the island expecting everything would be normal. Grayson finds himself falling for his best friend's ex while Mike is getting with his best friend's sister. Ian is dealing with his own newly discovered romance with a local tourist. Overall, personal tragedies, betrayals, and unexpected romances test the strength of their friendship. </p><p>Characterization: "Mike and his laid-back attitude about everything...He's tall and lanky like a ski pole, with dark hair that always looks like he went at it with a chainsaw" (Brody 3). Along with his physical description, this passage also tells us about Mike's personality. According to the passage, Mike has a relaxed attitude. He is not high strung or a stressful person. The passage also states that Mike has a bad hair cut which alluded to Mike not caring how his hair looks.</p>]]></description>

         <title>To Stay Alive: Mary Ann Graves and the Tragic Journey of the Donner Party</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Summary: After deciding to take the risk for better lives in California, Mary Ann and her family start their long voyage. Initially supposed to be three months, the risky trip ends up lasting around a year. Winter comes early making it impossible to continue the journey. As people come and go, Mary Ann meets, and loses, many people. As food and resources continue to dwindle, their group decides they must go to extreme measures. Mary Ann must make sacrifices and overcome the constant threats.</p><p>Internal Conflict: "I needed to survive... I picked up the half raw slivered piece of meat" (Brown 81). Mary Ann struggles internally with her morals. She must pick between survival and her morals. She must overcome her morals and decide she'd rather survive. In the end, this pays off and she is grateful to her younger self for overcoming that struggle.  </p>]]></description>
