Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice

For me, Domain 7 is a vital competency standard that highlights the importance of "cultural responsiveness, reflexivity and self-awareness" throughout healthcare. After further reading about this domain, I want to ensure that I am a culturally sensitive nurse. This understanding is vital to my nursing journey as I want to ensure nothing impacts my patients negatively. Additional reading on this domain has also reminded me that it is my job to ensure that I am aware of policies or systemic biases that may be present. This reminds me of how much of an important role I will be playing as a nurse and what things I should be looking our for.

As I come from a migrant family, I think about all those positive experiences and how the nurses I interacted with were culturally sensitive to my culture. In future, I want to provide a similar positive experience.

The World Health Organisation, also known as WHO, referred to social determinants of health as other factors influencing an individual's health outcomes (WHO, 2023). Three examples of social determinants include education, food insecurity and housing, basic amenities and the environment.

Education impacts migrants as individuals who do not have higher levels of education have been found to have worse health (Gumà et al., 2019). Education impacts migrants at different levels and has long-term impacts on them (Gumà et al., 2019). In relation to education, Australian migrants often do not know how they can take care of their health (R)

Food insecurity impacts migrants as they cannot have food consistently, which allows them to live a healthy lifestyle (AIHW, 2016). In relation to food insecurity, Australian migrants often come to Australia with health issues that result from their food insecurity; this includes issues such as diabetes and other adverse health outcomes (AIHW, 2016).

Housing, basic amenities and the environment impact migrants as poor housing qualities negatively impact an individual's health (Gumà et al., 2019). Migrants living in houses with overcrowding, mould and toxins can negatively impact their health. Therefore, better housing and environment minimise these impacts when they come to Australia.

World Health Organization.
