John Adams (Federalist) vs. Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican) Tie occurred between Thomas Jefferson & Aaron Burr (Jefferson's VP) The House of Representatives resolved the tie by voting Thomas Jefferson into office. The 12th amendment was added to the Constitution in 1804, stating that the offices were to be voted on separately.

Jefferson sent James Monroe to purchase territory from the french, he paid 15 million for 828,000 square miles of land in 1803. It doubled the size of the US, and he sent William Clark and Meriwether Lewis to explore the land. They traveled from st. Louis to the pacific coast and back.
