This image shows Mona getting jumped into the gang. The violence that the gang has and how dangerous it is. "Fifth Street! Fifth Street" Mona heard this coming from a car and it was another gang they were ready for violence. Here is a great example of gang violence. "Then I saw the gun and the flash. A shotgun, he's got a shotgun, my mind shouted at me." A rival gang shot Monas friend. The gangs have unnecessary violence over streets and territory which they don't even actually own.

The image illustrates the abuse that Mona takes. The picture correctly shows this because its a woman with a child and Mona was often with her child while Frank would abuse her. The first sights of abuse in the book is verbal abuse when Frank says "Damn, bitch, don't you ever shut up?" this starts a chain of abuse where later on frank escalates it to the physical. Frank continues the verbal abuse with "You best respect me, woman. You don't want to make me mad. you hear me?". Frank threatens Mona and later on acts on his threats. The first act of Frank physically abusing Mona is when he's smoking and doing drugs with his friends and she then tells them to leave Frank takes it personally and hits her which she describes greatly in the book "The slap caught me right under the chin and I flew backward, tumbling into a table, knocking over a second lamp. I saw stars and had a hard time pulling myself upright." this is going to eventually cause Mona to runaway and leave Frank and it shows the domestic violence Frank is doing and the trauma that Mona will later have.

The theme Grit and Perseverance is shown when Mona had failed to climb the wall for her police training many times she had kept trying and eventually was able to make it. That's why I chose this image as it relates to the theme and what Mona was attempting to do in the book. She shows grit and perseverance here where she describes "the portion of my training that was the wall in the obstacle course. I spent an hour at that wall, trying to beat it" even though Mona had found a roadblock in her path to success that she couldn't overcome at the time she kept trying and that is a great example of grit and perseverance. Mona continue to had trained at the wall for days and days until the academy finals. She had trained countlessly and described it "I learned different approaches and handholds and then one day, I made it over." She tells us about how many times she would attempt it and how hard she would work to find a way to accomplish it and this is a beautiful example of the theme.

The image illustrates the theme of drug abuse because it shows someone different than how they usually are and that's exactly what drugs do to Frank. Frank and other characters within the book are struggling with drug abuse causing them to make bad actions such as Frank abusing Mona. Frank and his friends were using drugs causing Frank to discontinue his duties of being a father and forgetting to care for his family. When frank and his friends are using Mona comes in and yells "Damn it, Frank, that's enough! Your son is sick and needs sleep, and so do I!" here is where Frank starts his physical abuse and Mona describes it thoroughly with " The slap caught me right under the chin and I flew backward, tumbling into a table, knocking over a second lamp. I saw stars and had a hard time pulling myself upright." The drug abuse had caused Frank to not think about his actions and he abuses Mona.

There are many examples of Mona fighting a battle with herself. The image chosen perfectly shows this its someone fighting with themself which Mona frequently does in the book. One example being when Mona gets the tattoo with Frank Ruiz on her wrist. This is her against herself because she was working on changing her life in a good way but ended up changing it in a bad way where others had noticed and scolded her on it. One quote from Brown saying "You talk about changing your life, and now you go out of your way to make yourself look like a no-good, goddamn gangbanger!" This shows her against herself because she's getting better but then makes stupid mistakes losing the progress she had made. Another example is when she gets pregnant. Mona is working a good job and is forced to quit because she made the mistake of getting pregnant.
