What stakeholders, foundations and institutions want is often starkly different from what communities actually need. How can we engage to find out actual community needs. One way is not to presume any one stakeholder has the entire picture these are classist and sometimes racist or gendered assumptions. The key? Awareness of bias and listening skills, community engagement and trust., undoing internalized isms, confronting/undoing unhealthy group dynamics manifested in sexist, racist, classist power dynamics. This can be hard emotional work but can be done intentionally.

Needs that have been uncovered while engaging in this youth group? The girls have specifically requested these 3 things

1. Mentorship

2. Trust

3. Positive Environment

America has and continues to be an evolving experiment. What makes us great is our willingness to change.

Change comes at the price often and many times that is the blood sweat and tears of our lived experiences. If we are lucky we have the privilege to have our stories heard or we have our sheer tenacity and demand that our stories about our journeys in life be heard at the collective table that is this great democracy.

Right now America is at a historical crossroads. Our collective is once again being demanded to examine our national consciousness and find answers to one of the most pertinent questions since the founding of this great nation, "What is Justice?"

To do so requires us to listen once again to the journeys of those most deeply affected by our justice system and often times the most unheard, our youth.

This is our and your opportunity to hear, feel, see and listen to what some of our most deeply affected populations have to say and by participating take one step further down America's Journey to Justice.
