  • People have certain Inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness.
  • All Men are created equal.
  • Individuals have a civic duty to defend these rights for themselves and others.
    • These ideas are what people who opposed the king wanted and felt like were being violated in the colonies. The writers of the Declaration used things from the English Bill of rights and philosophical ideas of John Locke.

This idea is that the majority of the governed people have consent over the decisions of the Government. It’s a belief that authority of the government and natural rights aren’t, and never will be, absolute. They also believe in the protection of one’s individuality regardless of race, religious beliefs and/or their own creed. They believed highly of one’s personal ability to verbally express their own ideas with no harmful repercussions. You can see this in the most famous literature of the American country. The Declaration of Independence states within its first few verses that, “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This quote personifies the liberal beliefs of John Locke and others.
