Daniela Andrade is a Honduran-Canadian singer and songwriter. Her music is Alternative/Indie and she has been a huge influence of mine. She started her music career off by posting videos on YouTube of her covering songs. I discovered these covers and a few originals back in 2011, and she started her YouTube in 2008. I was watching her videos when I was 12 years old, and it would inspire me and motivate me to learn the songs that she was covering. I admired that she would often make subtle changes to the songs to make them her own. Since then I have mostly followed all of her new music and I am blown away each time. It's been really inspiring to see how her style in music and songwriting has changed, and has become more uniquely her style and nobody else’s; also using more advanced equipment as technology has changed over the years. I also think it is very special when an artist can represent and share their culture through their music; Daniela Andrade has used Spanish in some of her songs such as 'Ayayai', 'Gallo Pinto', and 'Tamale". For Daniela, she finds it hard to say who has influenced her as she has changed a lot over her music career. In an SCMP intervew, she states "I used to listen to Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice, and Paolo Nutini."(James, 2016) In another interview in Our Culture Magazine, Daniela was asked "Who are some of your influences, and why is it that their music resonates with you?" and she replied with " Linkin Park, Gorillaz, King Krule, Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill… it’s hard to pick only a few. I think they’re just so lyrically interesting and honest. " (Pappis, 2020). As you can see, in 4 years time she had completely different answers. In 2016 she was inspired by singer/songwriters more involved in indie, folk, pop music to then more alternative, soul and hip hop artists in 2020.

Missy Higgins is an Australian pop singer-songwriter, who released The Sound Of White is Missy's debut album originally in 2004. The album was nominated for 5 ARIA awards in 2004 winning Best Pop Release. The following year it was nominated for 8 ARIA awards, winning 5. (The Sound of White (White LP), n.d.) Only a few years after this album was released, I was at the ripe age of 6 and I remember we had the album 'The Sound Of White' on CD. It was a family favourite to have playing in the car or on the stereo, and her songs have always stuck with me. Her songwriting skills are something I really admire, and her story is very inspiring; being a talented, fierce, Australian woman who has put out three #1 albums. The common thread present throughout Missy Higgins’ career is her down to earth nature, which invites her listeners to dare to look for perspective within their own lives.
I can confidently say her music has influenced me to begin songwriting, because I want to be able to make people feel, and think the same way I do when I listen to her songs.
In my previous gigs, I have performed many covers of a few of her songs mainly from her first album, some including Scar, Special Two, and Steer.

Erykah Badu is an American R&B, Soul and Hip hop artist who has been an influence for many in the music industry for a few decades now. Her debut album Baduizm was released on February 11, 1997. Similar to Missy Higgins, my mum had a CD of this album, and we would listen to it in the car often on long road trips. After listening to her music more as I got older, I have come to appreciate her creativity when it comes to music production now; having a better understanding of how it all works. She also has some very strong, down to earth, real and heart-felt messages in her songs. Erykah Badu has created lyrical content ranging from love and heartbreak to black oppression, drug/emotional abuse, criminal activity to equality. In this literature review named 'Hip-Hop’s Influence on the Identity Development of Black Female College Students', it reads: "The paradox of Black women’s participation in hiphop music can be heard in the voice of Black female artists like Erykah Badu, Missy Elliot, and Lauryn Hill, who challenge the stereotypical demeaning and demoralising portrayal of Black women in hip-hop music and Hip-Hop’s Influence on Black Women
videos. The voice and presence of these and other Black female artists have helped to combat the intensity of the sexism and exploitation of Black women in hip-hop
(Goodall, 1994)." (Henry et al., 2010) For me, Badu's Lyrics are empowering to myself, my African ancestry, and my future; as she speaks the harsh truth in a captivating, beautiful way.

Gorillaz is a 'virtual band' created by Damon Albarn of the alternative band Blur and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett, who are the only two constant contributors to the project. The band's essentially a 'Trip-Hop' band, but their music also combines other genres such as Alternative/Rock, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Electronic Music, Punk, Rock and Pop.
Over Daniela Andrade's career, she has taken a vast change in artistic direction since beginning; from youtube cover videos and early stage originals, to then releasing original content with a more unique style making use of the advances in music technology. Hannah Lupis said in Buzzing Daily on Spotify from TheWildHoneyPie.com "But recently, the initially more reserved Honduran-Canadian artist has been sharpening her pop-synth skills, introducing more lo-fi, Latin and jazz influences into her discography. " (Hannah Lupas, 2020). In her album "Nothing Much Has Changed, I Don't Feel The Same" released 30 September 2020, it is evident that Daniela has been inspired by the same music culture that the Gorillaz are involved in, including their creative ideas when it comes to voice effects, incorporating digital art, exploring multiple genres in the one album, and visual representations which match the song emotion. In the book ' Music, Sound and Multimedia: From the Live to the Virtual by Jamie Sexton' he states "Gorillaz’ music, although composed by the creative team behind the band, is informed by and openly references a gallimaufry of lyrical, rhythmical and melodic motifs from a range of genres." (Sexton, 2007)

It is evident that Lisa Hannigan has been a large influence on Daniela Andrade through multiple interviews in articles that state she has been a huge fan of Lisa's music since the early stages of her musical career. Daniela has a cover on YouTube of 'Lisa Hannigan- I don't know', posted on the 24th of March 2009. In an article by SCMP, Daniela is asked "Which artists you listened to as a child or teen shaped your music?" and her response was "I used to listen to Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice, and Paolo Nutini". (James, 2016)

Tyler The Creator is a rapper, music producer, video director, and also a talented songwriter. Tyler is also the co-founder of the raising hip-hop collection He is well known for creating the hip-hop collective ‘OFWGKTA’ also known as 'Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All' in 2011 with Jasper Dolphin, Matt Martians, Casey Veggies, Hodgy, Pyramid Vritra, and also Left Brain. His Hip Hop Music has had a large impact on many musicians, not just involved in hip hop but in many other genres too. Another example of this is from a Art and Design Review, titled 'Beyond Gangsta: Hip-Hop, Skate Culture and Web Culture in the Music of Tyler, the Creator', "His enthusiasm with the web culture made him support the Canadian jazz band BADBADNOTGOOD when they started to create reinterpretations of his music to the point of joining them in featured performances recorded in the basement of the drummer’s house Alexander Sowinski." (Marques, 2015). His music connects, and brings artists from all over the world together. For example, he has been a musical influence to Daniela Andrade too(who happens to be Canadian as well), even though their music take fairly different directions in the music world. In an Artist Spotlight article by OurCulture magazine, Daniela Andrade was interviewed by Konstantinos Pappis where he asked her "What are some of your influences, and why is it that their music resonates with you?" She replied, "Linkin Park, Gorillaz, King Krule, Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill… it’s hard to pick only a few.

Miles Davis was a talented American jazz musician, and a composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed musicians in the history of jazz and 20th century music. Unfortunately, he died on the 28th of September, 1991 at the age of 65. Miles was an inspiration for many in the Blues and Jazz music industry. Both genres originated in the Southern United States around the late 1800s to early 1900s, with blues arriving first, then jazz a little later. Both were inventions of African Americans, who combined African musical concepts with European musical concepts, thus making these both uniquely American music genres. You can see in this article called 'Popular Music: The Key Concepts: Second Edition', it reads "An RHYTHM & BLUES (R&B) 230 example of such hybridity is Erykah Badu, whose blend of elements of Afro-mysticism, R&B, and jazz has been labelled ‘neosoul’ (Rolling Stone, 20 February 2003: 72). Indeed, so broad has been the presence of R&B that the term is sometimes used as a general name for the corpus of black music.". (Shuker, 2001) With this, it is clear that Miles Davis was, and still is a huge influence for Erykah Badu and his impact on the R&B culture is extremely evident, especially in Erykah Badu's music; as she is always expressing her appreciation for her fellow African American musicians.

Alwin Lopez Jarreau, born March 12, 1940 and died in February 12, 2017, was an American singer and musician. Al Jarreau is the only artist ever to receive Grammy Awards in three different genres. He mixed jazz, pop and R&B into his own smooth, soulful groove and earned a reputation as one of jazz's sweetest vocalists. There's no doubt that growing up performing in his church choir helped him find his passion for music. In the Erykah Badu biography 'The First Lady of Neo Soul by Joel McIver, a quote from Badu reads "I used to pretend I was a horn all the time. That came from listening to Miles Davis and Bird and Al Jarreau with my uncle."(McIver, 2011). It is clear that he was quite a large influence on Badu from a very young age. Now, Jarreau is a winner of a total of 7 Grammys, and still remains a huge star of the American jazz circuit.

Chaka first earned commendation in the early ’70s, as the talented vocalist of largely popular funk act Rufus (Stevie Wonder wrote their first hit, “Tell Me Something Good”), before going solo in 1978 with the anthem “I’m Every Woman.” Her creative output has been impressive, putting out over 23 albums, receiving 10 Grammys. In 'Erykah Badu: The First Lady of Neo-Soul by Joel McIver, Chaka Khan is mentioned 16 times. All speaking of the different ways she has been influenced by Khan over her musical career. A quote from this book reads, "As we’ve seen, she took her vintage Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder influences and transformed them into a sound that was brand new and ancient at the same time...." (McIver, 2011)

Gillian reflects her personal experiences through her music as most musicians do, and had a large impact on the music scene in the Southern community. Her song lyrics lightly address the themes of change and continuity central to the Southern roots music. This article reads; "Her songs recount individual experiences which speak to larger themes of Southern change and continuity, reflecting those changes but also consciously making them. "(Kirby, 2006)
The need and want to make a change in the community through music is something that Missy Higgins has taken a huge step forward in the same direction with her new album Total Control; which was inspired by the political Australian TV show, addresses topics like gendered and cultural injustices.
