Monitoring
Monitoring a project is important because:

1. It helps you to track the progress of the project.
2. Tracking progress helps you determine what is working and what is not.
3. Monitoring helps you determine what changes need to be made, if any.
4. It helps you to see if the project is staying on track, according to the plan that you created.
5. Problems can be caught early, and can be addressed before they become major problems.

Reference to PMBOK Guide 6th Edition;
Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. page 613 section 5.
The process(es) required to track,review, and regulate the progress and performance of the project; identify any areas in which changes to the plan are required; and initiate the corresponding changes. Monitoring is collecting project performance data, producing performance measures, and reporting and disseminating performance information. Controlling is comparing actual performance with planned performance, analysing variances, assessing trends to effective process improvements, evaluating possible alternatives,and recommending appropriate corrective action as needed.
In my career I have used different systems that have been adapted by the different organisation I have worked for regarding monitoring and controlling a project but I always go back to PMBOK for clarity and guidance.
