April, Christal, Rayson, and Terence are monitoring along one of the transects in their school as the spotter, identifier, recorder, and photographer respectively.

As they begin their monitoring, they hear a Black-naped Oriole calling from a tree about 40 metres from the start of the transect. However, they are unable to spot the bird. Within the group, only April is able to identify the bird by its call. While Terence uses the school’s iPad to record an audio of the call for their teacher-in-charge to verify later, April insists that Rayson records one Black-naped Oriole has been observed. After Terence is done recording, they move further along the transect.

Throughout the remainder of the monitoring session, Christal and Terence are often moving behind April and Rayson by five metres. 60 metres into the transect, April hears a Black-naped Oriole calling from behind them and informs Rayson to record another Black-naped Oriole has been observed.

After the monitoring session, they verify with their teacher-in-charge that the audio recording is indeed the call of a Black-naped Oriole. They then consolidate their data and upload two Black-naped Orioles have been observed to their school’s NSS ESN project page on iNaturalist. However, they do not upload the audio recording as it has been verified.

April informed Rayson to record a Black-napes Oriole which she heard from behind them but they should not count birds they hear or sight from behind and should only count those in front of them. The team also did not upload the audio recording of the birds which they had verified and thus this data and information could not be shared with others.
