The most heartbreaking aspect of this story was finding out the mother's backstory and realizing how much suffering she had to go through. Through the story, it shows how immigrants in America are forced into hating and eventually give up on their culture to fit in with American societal norms. The paper menagerie was the connection between Jack and his mother and the way that his mother stayed connected to her family and her culture. Eventually, Jack and his mom were forced into giving up on their culture or learning how to hate it. The worst part of the story for me was how ack only found out about how significant The Paper Menagerie was after his mom passed away.

Thomas C. Foster writes that those who sacrifice can others can- intern- be seen as a religious figure of sacrifice. The mothers backstory is incredibly tragic and involves a number of sacrifices- not all being her own. One such example is those of the narrators mothers, mother- eating dirt in order to save food for her daughter; the irony being- after all the mothers sacrifices- now that food is not an issue, her child does not want it. This can be related back to Christ as it comments on insatiable greed and- in a way- disrespect to ones parents.
