This war began over Chinese governmental restrictions on opium, a product extremely harmful for the Chinese population largely sold by British traders (who associated with/were members of the British crown). The Zau family and their business had to navigate this time extra cautiously, as they traded heavily with the British at this time. These times of struggle lead to the family leaning farther into their less moral ventures of selling opium, in order to stay afloat by being able to pay people for safe passage.
