Slaves were taken to homes where people hid them until the next stage in their escape to freedom. The houses were called stations. Those that helped the slaves at the stations were called conductors. Some conductors had been slaves too. Harriet Tubman was one of them. When helping slaves became illegal in 1850 slaves had to go as far as Canada. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 did not stop the abolitionists who wanted to free the slaves, it just made it reach to Canada.
