Exhibit 7: Battles of Salamis and Plataea by Jillian Chingos https://padlet.com/jchingos/eblhwzev7oa9 In 480 BCE, during the Battle of Thermopylae, the majority of the Greek troops were sent home while Leonidas and his 300 Spartans delayed the Persian army. The Athenian citizens were evacuated to neighboring islands and Athens was burned to the ground by the Persians. Athenians capitalized on their understanding of the coastal geography and naval skills to lure the Persians into the narrow channel between the island of Salamis and the mainland, ramming and sinking 300 Persian ships in comparison to the 40 ships they lost. Xerxes fled in 480 BCE after the Battle of Salamis, leaving the rest of his army in Greece to attack in the spring. The Athenians joined forces with the Spartans to fight the Persians outside the town of Plataea in 479 BCE. One of the main ships used for battle was called the trireme. The trireme had three banks of oars on each side allowing up to 170 rowers to power the ship. This made the trireme very fast in battle.

The main weapon on a Greek ship was a bronze prow at the front of the ship. It was used like a battering ram. Sailors would ram the prow into the side of an enemy ship causing it to sink.
