Physical exam: Your doctor can observe the changes such as texture and size. (Smoother livers are healthier.)

Blood test: A blood sample would be taken and put in for a lab

Scans: CT, ultrasound, spleen scan

Biopsy: Taking liver tissue

Surgery: You can be diagnosed sometimes during a different surgery or a surgery called a dialysis surgery. It can also be diagnosed with a laparoscope ( a viewing tube inserted into the upper right abdomen through a small incision, about ½ inch)

What its doing to your body

Variceal bleeding. Variceal bleeding is caused by portal hypertension (an increase in the pressure within the portal vein which is the large vessel that carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver). Increase in pressure is caused by a blockage of blood flow through the liver from cirrhosis. Increased pressure in the portal vein causes other veins in the body to enlarge like ones in the esophagus and stomach. To bypass the blockage, these varices become fragile and can bleed easily, causing severe hemorrhaging and fluid in the abdomen.

Confused thinking and other mental changes which is also known as hepatic enephalopathy. Hepatic encephalopathy mostly happens when cirrhosis has been in your liver for a long time. Toxins produced in our intestines are normally detoxified by the liver, but once cirrhosis comes, the liver cannot detoxify as well. Toxins get into the bloodstream and can cause confusion, changes in behavior, and even coma.

Kidney failure can occur

Reduced oxygen in the blood

Diabetes can occur

Changes in blood counts

Increased risk of infections

Excessive bleeding and bruising

Breast enlargement in men

Premature menopause

Loss of muscle mass
