A Leicesteri Egyetem campusán, a főiskola házában nőtt fel, ahol az apja volt az igazgató.

 Három gyerek közül ő a középső, de sajnálatos módon bátyja (2014-ben halt meg) és öccse (2012-ben halt meg)már nem él.

1950-ben feleségül vette Jane Elisuabeth Ebsworth Orielt (1997-ben halt meg).
