There are a few exceptions, but generally this applies to most of the population in Iceland. 

Their last names are considered patronymic or in other words, composed of their father's first name with either the suffix -dottir (-daughter) or -son attached. Matronymic names have also been more common in recent years, where Icelanders have last names referring to their mothers instead

This type of system means that a family member would have a different last name from both parents and siblings of a different gender.
